I used the Express Lube at 441 and 466 in Lady Lake, and to my dismay discovered a fact the lube station does not tell customers. The services rendered DOES NOT include checking or filling the car's brake fluid. My bad assumption was that brake fluid was among the fluids checked and attended. Shortly after leaving the station, my brake trouble light went on. I stopped, checked the fluid level; it was a bit low. How can this be having just left the lube station? I was apprised that it is against the law for the lube station to attend to brake fluid.

It would be a reasonable service for the station to check the level, and to inform the customer.

I assumed wrong that checking fluids included brake fluid.

You need to be certified in order to work on breaks or any equipment related to breaks. And the business needs to be licensed for that too. So, this is a liability issue. Yes, they could tell you about the missing brake fluid, but you can’t blame them that they didn’t.

PS: Missing brake fluid is usually a sign that your brake pads are near the end. Check this out sometimes.

I stopped there in a hurry to leave town and in 30 minutes the add oil light came on, I added a full quart and when I looked under the van, I still had my old oil filter !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is why I do all my own oil changes. Have had this happen to me also. (not changed oil filter)

Brake Fluid should be checked for level and more important contamination from water and other corrosive actions. Except for DOT 5 , DOT 3 and 4 Brake fluids are Hydroscopic and absorb mositure. They also degrade from the interaction of metal particles in the internal brake system.

That said they are two schools-

Old school where the brake fluid is topped of at every oil change. Not a good idea!

New school ( Also manufactures recommendations ) where the fluid level is checked and also tested. If low the customer is notified that there are two possible reasons for this.

One- A leak

Two- The brake pads are wearing down getting thin and the brake caliper pistons are moving out. This lowers the fluid and at the same time notifies the consumer that brake pad wear is advancing.

If contaminated a fluid flush is recommended.

Even worse, they put 10/30 wt oil in my car even though manufacturer recommends 5/20.
They didn't tell me they were not following manufacturers recommendations. I looked on the bill and saw what they did, complained and got a story about how the hot weather requires heavier wt oil. They should have been up front. My car is under warranty and I follow manufactures recommendations. I'll never go back.

yes, that's why i always go to the dealer. Pay more, but at least i have back up, not to say that is the best way but for me it is a bit more confidence

NOT GOOD! I once heard of Quick Lubes hiring out of McDonalds. "Hey if you can change fry oil why not car oil.

ask them to produce the law in writing on state letter head. Not sure that law is true. Maybe just lazy people. Google the question

Same is true with most of the golf cart mechanics in the area
