Default Gutters

We recently closed on a new home in St. Charles. The house only came with gutters around the front entrance. One of the first jobs we wanted done was to have gutters installed around the rest of the house.
We took the advice of several TOTV members and chose Hills Seamless Gutters for the job. We got other estimates as well. Hills wasn't the least expensive but I felt comfortable with them. I contacted them by phone before we came to Florida. They always returned my calls, went out and measured the house ahead of time and faxed me an estimate.
The day after the closing they were at my home, right on time and did a nice, neat job. We were very pleased with their quality and service.
While they were there I mentioned some other jobs I wanted to get done, one of which was getting pull-down stairs installed for the attic access in the garage. Mr. Hill said they could do that as well. He gave me a good price. This was on Friday. We agreed that he would do the job on Monday. Sure enough, bright and early Monday morning they were there, installed the stairs and did a nice job of cleaning up.
This is a quality company. They do many things besides gutters and I look forward to doing business with them again.

I've only used them for gutters, but they have been excellent - on all three houses.

Is there a reason gutters are not installed all the way around the home at construction? In the north, I needed gutters to keep water from getting into the basement.

Do you really "need" gutters in TV?

Just curious...

Gutters are not installed during construction because its cheaper not to install them and there are no basements to flood here in TV.

We had gutters installed along the front of the garage and the back lanai area. Your conrete driveway will eventually get stained if you dont have them over the garage and we were simply trying to protect the lanai from getting so wet during the slightest of rain.

It certainly makes sense to have gutters anywhere you would enter or leave the house. It's nice that there is no basement to worry about flooding...

One house we had built in NY had no gutters. Prior to having them installed, a week or less after we moved in, the rain pouring off the house dug little trenches. I can't imagine what the torrential Florida rains could do to the yard, thus, I wanted gutters installed right away.

The rain DOES build little trenches, plus splashes mulch or rain on the siding. Yet many homes in The Villages still don't have gutters all around - I've especially noticed this in our CYV neighborhood that is almost 4 years old. We put them in first thing as well.

Is this something that only bothers Northerners who are used to gutters all around?

Hi Ohiogirl,
It's not just a Northerner thing. We have gutters all around in Atlanta and it would be a problem if we did not. We have that hard Georgia clay (as well as a basement) and hard rains would surely dig trenches. Maybe the sandy soil and lack of basements make them somewhat less necessary in Florida.

Yes, I also used Hill's Seamless Gutter. A very accomodating gentleman. He had his crew come the following day after his bid. I also find it strange that these homes don't come with gutters considering the downpours we get. The gutters that we ordered originally on the front of the house came gushing down onto the walkway. Like duh? Hill fixed all that.

It depends on your roof. We have a Wisteria , a little over 1600 sq. ft., with a gable roof and the gutters came to $387. The original price was $430 but there was supposed to be a coupon in the Daily Sun. I couldn't find it in the online edition but they gave me the discount anyway.

The number I have for Hill's is 1-352-245-7462. They did a great job installing my gutters.

We don't have gutters and don't have any issues with landscape/grass damage after five years. Half our neighbors have/don't have gutters.
