I am about to have knee replacement surgery and am interested in having a couple of grab bars installed in one of our bathroom to help with mobility. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who can install these?

My husband kept a walker in the shower when he had his second knee and his hip replaced. He stood inside it and had a grab bar that surrounded him. Worked flawlessly.

One option would be the grab bars sold at Home Depot or Lowes that attach with suction cups. They are strong and really work well. We installed them last year in my mothers shower and they are still working fine. Good luck with the knee replacement. Work hard on the rehab.

I would not trust suction cup grab bars. Too much is at stake if they should slip.

When I opened a thread about grab bars on TOTV I received a couple of suggestions. One was Grab Bar Bob, who advertised in The Daily Sun. I talked to him but did not feel his method of anchoring the grab bars to the plastic wall of the shower was adequate.

Another suggestion was Abshier Shelving & Mirror. They said they would not install grab bars in pre-fab plastic showers such as mine. They recommended Mike Scott Plumbing.

Mike Scott Plumbing gave an estimate, with one stipulation. Their method is to cut out the wall behind the shower and install a sturdy 2"x4" stud to which they affix the grab bar. However, they do not repair the wall. You have to find someone else to repair the plaster wall, and touch up repaint.

I had them make an installation both in the shower and the bathtub. I had a friend who is a handyman repair the walls.

I use the grab bar in the shower and it is quite satisfactory in assisting me to pull my 250 pounds up to a standing position from a shower chair. Then I use a walker to step out of the shower and transfer to a wheelchair. It works well for me.

My Mom and aunt both travel with the grab bars with suction cups. They are very strong! A lot of stores carry them. I think Bed & Bath also has them and you can use your coupon.

They definitely work. Today I called my mother and checked, hers are still fine.

Call Grab Bar Bob. He advertises in the Daily Sun. Fast, reasonably priced and knows what he is doing, especially if you are punching thru tile or plastic shower enclosures. Sorry,I'd give you the phone number, but I'm on the road.

Give Scott a call at Village Home Repair, he will meet with you to see your bath and go over your options. If needed he does remove sheetrock from behind to add blocking and then repair/paint the portion of wall removed.
