Has anyone had a TV mounted to the wall, when wall has metal studs? If so, did you have someone install it. Can I do it myself (37" TV)? What materials will I need? If not any recommendations will be appreciated....Laura

I'll be interested in responses to this post as well. We have just moved in and have a large flat-screen TV that we want to put on the wall. My husband is very handy, but he was also wondering if there were any issues to be aware of in working with metal studs. We've never had a house with these kind of studs.

I'd check with Alan Byer (205-7504) handiman +electrical. He did mine and did a great job. As far as the metal studs, the interior studs in my house are 24" on center, so most mounts will not be directly screwed into them. If it's not a heavy TV, then they use sheetrock anchors or screws with toggles. I'm told metal studs use a fine thread screw made for them. There are also home theater installation companies I've read about on TOTV that get into more complicated stuff, try doing a search.

I purchased a 55" tv from Best Buy and they installed it on my wall which also has metal studs. Personally I would not try this installation myself but I'm not very handy. Also with a heavy tv it takes some effort to lift it to get it on the wall.

As an aside my wife claims it's a little too high on the wall while I claim it's just right as you tilt your chairs back normally so you are looking straight at the tv while reclined.

A bit off topic, but what kind of TV did you get, LED or plasma? We're leaning towards plasma, but haven't ruled out an LED.

We had ours installed on the wall, same problem of metal studs back there. We used Dave and Son Home Theater. He was more reasonable on price then best buy and we are pleased with the results. His name is Dave Palumbo and cell is 352-895-0022.

I have both, a Panasonic 58V10 plasma (new model is vt25 in 3D) and a Samsung un46c8000 led (also 3D), which are or were one of top models offered by both companies. Each have their advantages. Plasma has better blacks, better off angle viewing, and 600hz, so there's not a problem with motion. You also usually pay less for a plasma with a bigger screen than led. Disadvantage is not as thin as led in most cases (Samsung has a thinner model, but I'm told it buzzes), not as efficient, could be subject to image retention, and gives off more heat. My led is thinner, more efficient, much lighter in weight, has a brighter picture, and is cooler looking. Disadvantages are, not as deep blacks and less viewing angle. When I move down for good, the plasma goes in the living room and the led goes in the master bedroom because the plasma has a better picture and will get viewed much more. To be fair, I had a top calibrator come in to do the plasma, so any comparison to the led is not apples to apples. He also told me that he preferred plasma, but if you want an led, and money wasn't a consideration, to get an led that has local dimming rather than edge lit. I also have edge lit, and they have good pictures, but the local dimming is superior. Bottom line is, they all have good qualities, just compare the pictures and choose the one who's picture is most appealing to you.

Hi Laura, if you're going to buy your own parts, try the site below. Great prices on mounts and cables. CNET uses their cables for their test equipment. My son and I have bought most of our stuff from them and have always been satisfied. Low prices too..

Cut 3/4 inch sanded plywood large enough to get to as many studs as possible without extending past the size of the TV. Paint the plywood the same color as the wall. Mount the plywood with at least 2 screws per stud, using 2 inch #10 sheet metal screws with washers. Mount TV bracket per manufacture instructions. IMHO.

One thing to consider is to put it on the wall opposite the kitchen cabinets if that is at all possible. There are wooden studs in those walls to support the cabinet's weight. We were fortunate enough that we wanted ours on a wall opposite the kitchen cabinets. I know everyone doesn't have that option, but a few do.

Got a LED...not plasma...Not much of a TV person..so Im not difficult to please..I just wanted it mounted correctly..Laura
