Any suggestions of reasonable and reputable installers of lightning rods in The Villages?

My strongest advice is to select an installer that is "listed" by Underwriters Laboratories and the Lightning Protection Institute. There are three known to be working in The Villages; A-1 Lightning, Advanced Lightning, and Triangle Lightning. These are reputable contractors who DO NOT GO DOOR-TO-DOOR. This is a buyer beware market place. For more inforation see the back issues of the POA Bulletin, Lightning Matters, at poa4us.prg.

Lightning, above, is a true expert and we have heard his presentation to our village. He does not get paid for sharing his information and is not connected to any person installing lightning rods. He is a villager and he and his co-presenter researched the problem of lightning in this area after having seen several homes burn to the ground here in The Villages.

Thank you Lightning for the good work you do.

I agree Gracie. Our social club also had the presentation....very, very informative!

Advanced installed our rods. The UL certifying agent came to inspect after installation was completed...and certificate was issued.

Default Cost of Lightening Rods?

Does anyone know the approximate cost of having a lightening rod installed on a 1700 square foot home in the Villages?

The cost of a lightning protection system installed by a UL "listed" installer will depend on the size of your roof including any birdcage. You can expect a cost of about $1,300 for a villa and over $3,000 for a premier. The door-to-door installers will charge less than half of these amounts but you will have no idea if the system was designed and installed to the national standard on lightning, NFPA 780, 2011 edition. This is a buyer beware market place. If you are going to do it - do it right. See earlier post with the names of listed installers.

I just had quote from one of the UL listed installers mentioned here in this thread, I have a designer home with a birdcage and was quoted $1700, my home is 2000 sq ft. That does not include a surge at the box or cable protectors, that is extra. The surge protectors at the box are UL listed and run around $400, a 10 year warranty, you can also buy it thru SECO at a monthly rate of $5-6 but I am not positive on this, just make sure SECO's are UL Listed. The installer will do a yearly inspection also, and if a strike does happen they will come out and check it again. I am installing this in December as I have had a house struck by lightning, not taking a chance again.

If the install was done my anyone other than those 3 listed above I would like to know if the installation can be thereafter inspected by a UL underwriter.

I believe it can for a standard UL inspection fee.

Yes, you can choose to have the system inspected by a UL engineer but ONLY if the system was installed by a UL listed installer.. When my system was installed I received a UL certificate after the inspection in 2007. The price at the time was in the $300-400 range. Unfortunatley, UL has since doubled their prices to make it cost prohibitive for most people to have such an inspection. The Study Group on Lightning has lobbied UL to set a one day price and then have UL conduct 4 survays in a day to bring the cost down. So far to no avail. If you have a system installed by a non-UL installer my advice would be to have it inspected by one of the three listed installers. They should be able to tell you if it meets NFPA 780, the national standard on lightning.

Good luck with that system, I spoke with a representative from WB lightning rods. They specified they install UL listed parts but when asked about a UL certification they declined and basically said UL was a joke. No thanks!
