Default Glazed Porcelain Floor Tile

Looking at replacing current Padded Vinyl Flooring in Kitchen, Bathrooms & Entry with Glazed Porcelain Floor Tile in Designer Home. We've been to Great Lakes Flooring in Wildwood - estimate is approx $6,000 & 3 days work. We're thinking of making deposit now but installing 3 months later (our choice on install timing). Great Lakes said they'll hold tile in their warehouse. Anyone have experience like that? Read Great Lakes is high pressure? Do they do quality work?

Any feedback positive or negative on Great Lakes Flooring? How do their prices usually compare with other Flooring companies? The Floor Shoppe? Village Flooring? Others?

Appreciate feedback & comments. Thanks!

One word of caution, GLAZED tile does not sound like a good idea where water is present. If you check with the experts (tile associations), there is a recommended friction level for tile that may become wet. Please check on this before you have an accident. I cannot comment on cost, as I have no idea the cost of the tile (I am assuming this is included in the $6000). My suggestion would be to get multiple estimates, review this site for good and bad comments on tile contractors, and also (VERY IMPORTANT) from another post, be sure you specify your expectations for CENTERING of tile within the rooms, and orientation of tile, square with the rooms or diagonal. Get a written contract, and I see no reason to pay anything up front. Simply set a date for the future install so the contractor has time to order the tile.
Hope this helps.

This site is loaded with complaints from people who pay money in advance to contractors, and then the contractor does not perform as promised. You should not need to pay anything in advance. But, if you absolutely need to pay in advance for materials only, make sure the contractor provides a written contract with a time limit, and will accept a credit card that can be disputed if he fails to perform. If not, find another contractor.

Last fall we had Lowe's furnish and install approx 1,000 SF of 6" x 24" Porcelain Ceramic Floor Tile including one toilet R&R by a plumber for $7,500. Tile took 2 installers 3 days a week for 3 weeks. Got 18 month no interest terms on Lowe's credit card.

Very nice flooring and work.

We purchased our high end designer quarry tile from Lowes some years ago and had it laid by a private individual working with our contractor. We actually moved out of the house for a week so that the tiler could work. The floor is excellent, we have it whole house other than for the wood floors in the bedrooms.

Personally, I do not like the idea of glazed porcelain. I would be very concerned about cracking and chipping, but as they say, to each his own.
