Has anyone had an above-ground hot tub "installed" on their lanai? If so, is permission required from The Villages? any difficulties getting the needed electrical setup? And, any experience (positive or negative) with Florida Spa and Pool Warehouse in Leesburg? Thanks, all!

I have had spas for 30 years. The only one we did not like was in ground. It is better to be in a spa that does not have you're head at ground level.

Never thought of that! We had an above-ground one at our former home, which is why we are thinking that way for here. May I ask what brand of spa(s) you have had? We had a Hot Springs spa that lasted 20 years, so we're leaning that way.

We have a small 2 person "Solana" spa on our deck in PA. It was relatively inexpensive, uses only 160 gal of water to fill (and to heat) we enjoy it immensely during the winter. I somehow doubt we would use it if we have it in TV. It is such a cool thing to relax in when it is freezing cold or snowing...none of which we expect in TV

We had one installed by Spa Kingdom, and they handled all of the details, including the installation of the electrical supply, safety switch, GFCI and grounding, as well as the removal of the lanai screening, the installation of the spa, and the reinstallation of the screening. It went very smooth, essentially completed in one day.

We have a Michael Phelps above ground Momentum SwimSpa with a propulsion jet pool and fantastic hot tub. We did get a permit to have it installed but more because of the pool. We also had an electrician put in an 80 amp electrical box outside.

One thing to consider when installing anything above ground is that when you climb up the ladder, you can see over the fence. You need to respect your neighbor(s) so they do not feel like you are looking in their yard when you get in and out of the spa or pool, even though you may not be. We had a roller shade, huge, installed, with an electric switch inside the house that we use to put the shade down before we use our pool and then we put it back up when we come in the house. I think it is really important to make your neighbors feel they have privacy when you are 9 ft tall on the steps going in and out!

We have had two hot tubs since 1990, both Hot Springs at our home up north. Both were above ground with two steps to get in and out. Both have run without a 220 line and we have been in with the temp around zero for about thirty minutes. Thinking about getting one for down here, time will tell.

We ended up getting a 2 person Hot Springs spa from Florida Spa & Pool in Leesburg (owned by the same family as Spa Kingdom). Small spa, but does the job on achy joints and fits perfectly on our lanai. This is a nice family to do business with, love the spa. Although 220 not required, it does require a dedicated circuit, so one way or the other you will end up having an electrician come out. Very painless process.

Could you possibly share with us the approximate cost of the installed spa?

We had a top of the line hot tub/spa installed from Spa Kingdom, 240 branch circuit installation just under $1000, lanai screen removal and re-install $100, plus the cost of the spa. Spa Kingdom handled all of the details and had the entire installation done in one day, and we were using the spa the next day (after the water heated up). The electrical connection was a little complicated due to the location of the spa, and electrical code requirements. These guys were great to deal with.
