If you don't have any edging around your planted areas, I guess you could hit a piece of mulch with your weed wacker.

The termite mulch thing sounds like something an exterminator would say to his customers. In my experience in attending at least, over a hundred house/termite inspections, never have I seen or heard about termites from mulch. Bugs, yes. Lizards, yes. Particularly when the weather gets colder, they may hibernate in mulch. In addition, you'd couldn't possibly have termites at all, if the mulch was cypress.

It depends on how thick you want it but I think about 25 sq.ft. per bale is a good estimate.
