IMHO, you will probably need a plumber to replace the entire valve, which will need to have the water turned off at the meter, not sure the plastic valves are repairable like metal ones.

Here is a website on how to replace plastic valve handles.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I think one of the water softener or filter companies could do it. Typically, they reroute the plastic water supply lines to install their equipment. I don't know if they will do it or how much they would charge. But, it looks pretty easy to replace the tee handle. Mine is red, and says "American Valve" on it.

We had a lot of trouble turning it last time. Is there anything we can do in advance to prevent it from breaking? Maybe it’s buildup of minerals in the water?

I don't know if this is the right answer but every once in a while I would gently turn the handle on and off a few times.

I had a plumber put in a different metal handle and it is much easier to use now.

Which plumber did you use? How much was it?

One suggestion, if you do get a plumber to do the job ask him to put in a metal valve with long handle. This type of handle is so easy to turn. The main water valve may never be touched but if a leak happens and one needs to close it in a hurry you only hope that it isn't frozen in place. That did happen to me, fortunately I had a wrench right there that allowed me to close it. I replaced it with something that will not jam.

Keep in mind this isn't he normal 1/2 inch white PVC used in irrigation but 3/4 inch off white CPVC fire retardant and can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes; I got the best match at Home Depot as I'm installing a whole house filter system.
