If you go to a pet store, you can get a water test kit, it will give you the hardness, which will tell you if your unit it working. Also, if you bypass the unit, and run the water for several minutes, and then test it will give you the harness level, so you will know the setting for the recycling, I am assuming this is a salt type unit.

I have never had a water softener or filter in my life. The water in The Villages is fine for me and better than most places I have lived. Just my opinion.
