Looking for a reputable service company to service a water softener. I understand there is filter or something that should be changed periodically.

IMHO, if your system has a manufacturers name, Nova, Pelican, Boss, Sears, etc., come to mind, I would start with the local vendor for that brand. I am familiar with Sears, and there is virtually no maintenance for the life of the unit, unless dirt or sand gets into the metering orifice. Other systems, one or more filters, and need to have one or more replaced at specific intervals. If you post your specific make/model, I am sure there will be others that will be able to give you specific advice.

The reason I'm asking is because I got a letter form the local dealer stating it was time to replace the filter so as not to void the warranty. Well, the 5 year warranty had already expired. When I call to find out what it was about and the cost, all I could get out of them is "well we will have to send a technician out to see what is required". OK maybe, but it sounded to me as a phishing trip to sell me something I probably don't need.
