Yard Care
I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some references for mowing
and triming our yard. We currently have a Co. which charges $62 does not mow in the winter, (but still charges) and now is skipping some weeks and the yard is not up to par but the bill keeps coming in !! It is a corner lot with very little in the back (couple of Yards) and little on the opposite side to mow of house. Thanks for any references you can give.. |

Your yard sounds just like ours and we use Tri-County who also do not mow in the winter when it really is not necessary but they show up, trim and weed every week for $40 a month. Mowing, trimming and weeding every week $40 a month. That would have been $50 a WEEK in the Boston area.

Anyone know what you do with grass clippings and yard waste if you do your own lawn cutting? |

I use Bob's Lawn Service 352-603-3329. Never a problem. they vary the direction of the cut periodically, cut on a weekly basis. only if needed in winter but still trim. I have a corner lot and they charge me $40. Give them a call for a quote!

it has been my experience with yard businesses that it is customary to estimate the work on an annual basis and bill on a monthly basis - in order to insure a year-round income; and that mowing is not done in the winter because there is nothing growing. trimming, edging, weeding are add'l criteria that will be added to your total cost when you discuss taking them on. hope the explanation makes it a bit more clear for ya.

Yard Care
Could someone please tell me if an owner is allowed to mow and care for their own yard or do you have to use a service ?

Yes, owners are allowed to do their own yardwork. It has to be a labor of love though, as lawn care companies do it quite reasonably. Honestly, I prefer to do it myself but had to hire a service because we're snowbirds and heading North soon. |

waynej - there is a lot to be said for doing it yourself - the biggest factor to me is that you will not have to be concerned about what the mower is bringing into your yard from other properties - which may not be as well maintained as yours. we just watched a neighbor replace the entire front yard of his property - lawn had developed some sort of rot that has not infected other lawns on the block!

Before we moved down here permanently, we had a lawn service but had nothing but trouble with them. As soon as we were permanent here, I bought a mulching lawnmower, and I do my lawn myself. I'm a gardener so I love being out there -- and I don't get "stuff" from all the other people's lawns, and I don't get "ruts" from the heavy equipment the commercial cutters use.
I don't bag my cuttings, but if you don't have a mulching mower, use the brown lawn refuse bags and put it out on pickup day. Happy mowing ! ! |
