Default Bill de Blasio flips, now vows to defund New York police

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio knuckled under to protesters Sunday and promised to cut funding to “New York’s Finest.”

Just two days after speaking skeptically of demands by Black Lives Matter and other protesters to defund the police, Mr. de Blasio agreed to start doing so, though he gave few specifics.

“We’re committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services, that will happen literally in the course of the next three weeks, but I’m not going to go into detail because it is subject to negotiation and we want to figure out what makes sense,” the mayor said, the New York Times reported Sunday.

Wow and I thought he was the mayor of all the people in NYC and so supposed to look after all their interests.

Guess he does not see it that way.

He’s a moron. Once the police departments get defunded, what we see happening now will just be our way of life. So ridiculous! By the way, I saw a looter and rioter come out of a store with some “my pillows” guess he needs a good days sleep to go back out and loot some more tonight.

I suspect it is nothing more than a face saving game of words to CYA....when all gets said and done not much in the way of change will happen to the police force.

The permissive ways of the day will continue to protect the bad apples, hence they remain to make another crisis another day.

He just assured he won't be re-elected. The people he's trying to please are really not voters, they're loud mouth agitators and the people who live, work, shop and spend money in the city will see it's such a failure and dangerous the guy will be soundly defeated!

I think he served his two terms already. I think that’s all he is allowed. Like the old saying goes don’t let the door hit you.....

A lot of people (I was one of them) think that "defunding" police departments means getting rid of the police department. It doesn't. Over the years, the governments of most cities and states have dropped all kinds of programs and had the police departments step in and do the work. For example, mental health clinics have lost all kinds of funding and now police departments are forced to deal with mentally ill folks that once might have gone to the clinics. Similar with other things like drug counseling and even animal control in many areas. The police have had their budgets increased in part to offset the loss of these services from other departments. "Defunding" police departments means taking some of the money that would have gone to the police departments and giving it to other community support departments like mental health clinics, drug counseling clinics, etc. This should offset the work in those areas from our overworked police officers and have it done by professionals specializing in those areas. It does NOT mean eliminating entire police departments and embracing lawlessness. At first, I was against the idea of defunding police departments but I am seeing how that may actually be helpful.

How many terms can you serve as mayor?
On November 3, 2008, however, when Michael Bloomberg was in his second term of mayor, the City Council approved the extension of the two-term limit to a three-term limit; one year later, he was elected to a third term. The two-term limit was reinstated after a referendum in 2010.
