Mass shootings
Since Atlanta mass shootings, US has had 45 mass shootings. What will it take to change this trend? Surely to goodness, there is an answer to this problem.

I think lack of excellent mental health treatment, care and facilities is 95% of the problem.

In many cases we find out that the shooter was known to local police and/or FBI. In the FedEx situation the guy had a rifle or some kind of gun taken away from him a year or so ago because he was suicidal. That gun was NOT returned to him. He then went out and bought two more. His name should have been in a database of people who are NOT allowed to purchase firearms. Is there such a database that covers the entire country? If so, is it not updated in a timely manner? I don't know ...

Texas House approves open carry without a permit for handgun owners - CBS News Of course, mental health is an issue, however, I subscribe to this from an article a few years back... So many people have said that mental illness is related to mass shootings from disparate political beliefs, for so many decades, and so many different times that it’s easy to just accept the premise without questioning it. This is “illusory truth.” However: there is no factual link between mental illness and violence against others. In fact, people with mental health disorders are more likely to be victims of a violent crime (up to 10 times more likely than the general population) than the perpetrators. A 2011 meta analysis found that to prevent one homicide of a person unknown to the perpetrator, 35,000 patients with schizophrenia judged to be at high risk of violence would need to be detained. Similarly, few U.S. mass shootings have been committed by people who were “mentally ill;” there is a much stronger correlation with other issues, like domestic violence. Finally, people with mental illness are much more likely to hurt themselves than others. Two-thirds of gun deaths in this country are suicides, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Dangers of Linking Gun Violence and Mental Illness | Time Question for gun owners, who always seem to think there is some conspiracy to get them, what does a gun owner need an automatic weapon that kills so many, so quickly.....? |

Come at the problem from every direction and find something that works to fix it. More education about mental health would help, more stuff about cyberbullying and person-to-person bullying made available, more realistic discussions about the effects of gun violence on families and communities, etc. Mostly done locally though. There are very good mental health professionals out their and the patients and their families would have an idea who these people are as would the other local health professionals. Get them more involved with helping people cope.

I'm afraid that horse has long ago left the stall. SCOTUS' decisions over the years have basically ignored the original reason for the 2A (no standing military, so "militia's" needed them) and continues to try and be expanded by those who are in love and obsessed (rightfully called "ammosexuals") with their guns. The idea that weapons used for war are needed by civilians, to potentially fight a modern government military, is simply ludicrous and a red herring. I own a handgun, bolt-action hunting rifle and a shotgun, which is all anyone actually needs. It's hard to think any of the FF's agreeing with, or even imagining, what has happened - since they were alive.

There were no restrictions on gun ownership (or even artillery) at the founding of the country. So the founders seem to disagree with your "enlightened" comment.
