Default An expert talks about face-masks

She trains OSHA and medical people on the usage of face-masks. It's on YouTube and if I didn't transfer properly, you can do your own search there with her name.

When seat belts first came out people wouldn't wear them, they thought they would prevent them from getting out of the car in the case of an accident. My father thought that were a good idea and went out and bought them to install in our car. Since people weren't wearing seat belts the government required air bags to be installed in cars. Now people put on their seat belts without a second thought. After many years of sear belt use it's been proven that seat belts save lives.

Think of a mask as an early seat belt and save lives.

Did you actually google the video and watch it?? She's an expert in the usage of masks with a business training folks (in the medical field) I'd suggest watching it to form an opinion.

I have no idea whether she knows anything or everything because I profess no medical knowledge.

i do know she represents an activist group in Michigan who had their account shut down (I think they have re emerged with a new name now).

YOUTUBE has videos on anything you want....not the place to get medical advice......

Tammy K. Herrema is actively involved with the Stand Up Michigan group which supported the armed right wing groups demanding the reopening of the state of Michigan. She is NOT a medical professional and medical advice should be coming from medical professionals, not people with a political narrative and no medical experience. She should be fired from O.S.H.A. if she already has not been.

I could make a video saying that I am a Doctor or a Priest and put it up on You Tube. I bet some would foolishly believe me and take any advice I give as gospel.

In addition to the initial seat belt furor, and probably more applicable to the current mask vs. no-mask issue, were those screaming about losing their "rights" and "liberties" when smoking in public places was being curtailed.

Then we have polls showing that a similar push-back is coming from those who have stated (about 1/2?) that even if a vaccine for Covid-19 was found, they aren't sure or would refuse to take it. Which is kind of nuts, given that most people don't know that we might still be under British rule and there would not currently be a United States of America, had George Washington not mandated a crude inoculation against smallpox for his troops.

How Crude Smallpox Inoculations Helped George Washington Win the War - HISTORY

Because Washington knew the ravages of the disease firsthand, he understood that the smallpox virus, then an invisible enemy, could cripple his army and end the war before it began.

That’s why Washington eventually made the bold decision to inoculate all American troops who had never been sickened with smallpox at a time when inoculation was a crude and often deadly process. His gamble paid off. The measure staved off smallpox long enough to win a years-long fight with the British. In the process, Washington pulled off the first massive, state-funded immunization campaign in American history.

The YouTube video you mention is intensely boring. She spends the first ten minutes of the 45 minute video simply telling us how much she knows about the topic. In brief, I think she is saying that wearing masks such as N95 masks can cause problems for some people. She says they aren’t meant for all-day use. They restrict air a bit when you breathe in and cause a slight positive pressure on your lungs when you breathe out. She says this could potentially make some people lose consciousness. She says that N95 masks don’t filter out the Covid virus. However, she does not take into account this much more interesting animated video you will enjoy.

YouTube

While she may well be right about some health problems that can be exacerbated by face masks, and while she may know how to do the pressure tests that measure the air pressure while inhaling and exhaling, those tests are expensive, take time, and are one-on-one, performed only by OSHA certified experts. Given that we have a hard time even providing virus testing that can be done by hundreds of thousands of health care professionals, I don’t think the testing she recommends is going to be readily available. If some people have a hard time with masks, so be it. I’m always happy to take mine off. But if that is the case, they should stay home, self-quarantine, keep their distance. They should stay out of stores, for the sake of themselves and of others. She says masks can increase CO2 in the blood because some CO2 is left behind in the mask that would dissipate without a mask. That may be true. However, this is even more the case if you use a snorkel or SCUBA gear. It also happens if you sleep with a sheet and blanket partly over your face at times or with your mouth partly blocked by a pillow. It also happens in a much worse way if you have asthma or sleep apnea. A mask is a filter. It’s not a plastic bag over your head and taped around your neck.

The fact is, even lousy masks, if they are worn correctly, slow forward air flow and can stop a lot of it. Good ones can stop a lot more and slow most of the rest. They can slow it coming in as well as going out. Are they perfect? No. Are they better than no masks when you are standing near people talking with them? Definitely! I’d rather be 90% safe than 0% safe.

Think about it. I got the old shingles vaccine, even though it is only 40% effective. I’ve had pneumonia vaccines because they can prevent many types of pneumonia, though not all. I get the flu vaccine every year, even though it is maybe 50% effective. And then I avoid people with the flu. Careful distancing and proper wearing of dust masks by all parties is probably over 90% effective. In essence, because pretty much everyone in The Villages is able to self-distance unless they are dealing with, say, home health aides and housekeepers and such, they can all remain virus free—but only if they use masks properly indoors Around people and in close proximity outdoors. (You don’t need a mask to walk or bicycle alone or in a golf-cart or car by yourself.)

How was Y2K a joke? We took action to prevent something bad from happening and the bad thing didn’t happen. Isn’t that great news?

You know, if you don’t eat, you will starve to death. The fact that you are now alive does not mean that eating was unnecessary.

Default To mask, or not to mask, that is the question

To mask, or not to mask, that is the question—Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to protect others or demand your free constitutional right.

In recent weeks we have seen people on the news carrying signs, some brandishing weapons, screaming that it’s their constitutional right to refuse to wear masks. Their claim is that they have the freedom of choice when it comes to their bodies. No matter what your view these protestors are correct.

The irony of this is, these are the same group of people you will most likely find screaming and spitting on women entering an abortion clinic. I’m an aging male and hold no opinion on abortion. But as it stands today woman within specific guidelines have the same freedom of choice when it comes to their bodies.

Everyone should take a step back life is tough enough without all of this.

This is not the first time in history that mask were mandated and most likely won’t be the last. I don’t laugh now at people wearing mask in 1918-1919 and I don’t laugh at other countries wearing all the time. Japan have been wear mask for years and years out on courtesy for their fellow citizens. They wear them not spread any disease or flu. Maybe that’s why their numbers or lower then most countries.
Maybe if we would step back and learn from history and others we can help our country during this crazy time.
