China's 21-TON rocket set for uncontrolled reentry in a few days

China’s 21-ton Long March 5b rocket is orbiting the planet in a path that could lead to the massive vehicle crashing back to Earth within the next few days, experts warn.

The core stage launched Thursday to deliver the first modular of the nation’s new space station, but instead of returning to a pre-determined post in the ocean, it is predicted to make an uncontrolled reentry - and possibly in an inhabited area.

When the rocket stage falls to Earth, most of it could burn up in the atmosphere, but large pieces could survive that could rain down on populated areas - as the range is nearly 80 percent of the globe.

Space debris trackers observed it moving slowly and unpredictably to Earth over the past few days, and reentry of the vehicle would be one of the largest uncontrolled descents on record.

Long March 5B is about 100 feet long and 16 feet wide and although more than 10 tons of space debris has been left in orbit for an uncontrolled reentry, McDowell said that ‘by current standards it's unacceptable to let it reenter uncontrolled.’

The previous report indicated the path for the possible debris did NOT include the state of Florida, I think it went from Texas area to the Northeast. About 60% of the path was over water. Just saw that the 'rocket scientists' following this cannot currently predict the final path and entry point as the friction with earths atmosphere is variable. I am guessing they will have a much better prediction in the next few days.

Very true plenty of time to worry if they decide it will come down over land.

Would imagine most of it would burn up during reentry

Jonathan McDowell, a spaceflight observer, told the website that since 1990 there have been no instances of any spacecraft over 10 tons that have "been deliberately left in orbit to reenter uncontrolled."

The report said the rocket’s core stage, when empty, is about 21 metric tons in mass. (You can track the rocket here.)

"It’s potentially not good," McDowell said, according to The Guardian. "Last time they launched a Long March 5B rocket they ended up with big long rods of metal flying through the sky and damaging several buildings in the Ivory Coast."

We vs They-a common thought on most subjects.

Getting our own people, let alone the world to agree on anything as well who will pay for it
seems impossible. Junk in space? More and more is being launched.

Perhaps, a solution would be a lazer in space. Who would pay for it? Would the rest of the world trust us? Would we trust other countries? Will it lead to a space arms race?

Issues, problems are too common. Solutions tend to be too rare and difficult to actually do.

I just looked it up 71% of the earth is covered in water. Uncontrolled, random 71% chance it will land in the water.

Only if it falls on you. But earths covered mostly with water odds are you’re win the powerball 100 times or more before hit by space junk. Now I’m sure somebody will Google and come up with rebuttal?

Latest indications are NASA will have only hours of notice for the anticipated 'landing' area.

Don't worry.

There are 767,720,519,000,000 Square Feet of surface on the planet Earth.
If the object is only 160 square feet and a majority of the object will burn before striking the planets surface,
then the chances of this object striking you are in The Villages are ------

1 in 552,000,000,000,000

So, don't worry.....
