The law says otherwise.

1st post that made any sense to me out of about 20 posts. I hope that the other 19 do NOT represent the thinking of the majority of TV Land? I see so much venom here that it is scary. Is this post the only sane one. The only one that took the time to find out the details of the incident. The 19 out of 20 seemed to just jump to a conclusion that supported their pre-programmed venomous and biased viewpoint. If 19 out of 20 Villagers have this level of pent-up hatred then the idea of America as the "Great Melting Pot" is dead. And no wonder the world has turned its back on America.

How would Jesus help a man walking, confused in a circle, with a knife? I am just speculating?

Jesus would not have to worry about being killed by that knife, or anyone else being killed by that knife. And they treated mental cases a lot different in those days. I doubt you would wish for their kind of laws to be initiated here, now.
I have yet to read ANY post on here that was convincing enough to warrant that a police officer should attempt to take the knife away from the subject. There was no evidence that it could have even been done safely. As a matter of fact, ALL of those posts that suggested such a ridiculous idea would also be yelling that the police did nothing to stop him, if he suddenly stabbed a few innocent bystanders. Then the police would be accused of negligence by the same folks that deemed it unnecessary for them to shoot the subject. Some folks are just blinded by their bias against the "white man."

Such a shame.
From what I saw on the video, it wasn't a self-defence shooting. Wallace had a very small knife - why use deadly force? Taser him or lassoo him, or shoot him non-lethally. There was no need for deadly force.

Did you see any tasers on the police? We do not "lasso" or "shoot....non-lethally." There is no such thing in America. You probably got that from TV or cowboy movies. Like someone else brought up, if a couple guys with box cutters can kill thousands of people on 9/11, surely a deranged(?) idiot can take a policeman or two down easy enough. Sorry, but even though unfortunate for the deceased and his family, I prefer his loss over that of ANY police officer attempting to protect American citizens. Besides, look at all the taxpayer money they saved.

Perhaps some like-minded citizens could form a volunteer group in each metropolitan area. When a "disturbed" person, or one high on street drugs is wielding a knife, threatening others, an unarmed member of the volunteer group could be immediately summoned to the scene to replace the police officers on duty. This volunteer could certainly "reason" with him, convincing him to surrender his weapon, therefore eliminating the potential for unjustified police violence. Any takers?

I don't know if you have any experience shooting a pistol because it is extremely difficult for a good marksman to hit something as small as a leg on a moving person. In a panic situation adrenaline surge will affect fine motor skills, such as aiming a gun properly and accurately. It also causes a person to have tunnel vision so most people involved in a shooting don't accurately remember how many rounds they shot. Most will say only a few when a number of shot were fired. The vast majority of police officers in their entire 20+ years of service never pull their gun in the line of duty let alone have to shoot someone. It takes a lot of training in these types of scenarios to give officers the knowledge of what to do. However, training only goes so far, it takes an actual shoot out to hone those skills. The military trains all the time for war and even after all the training the death rate for new to battle soldiers is higher than for experienced fighters.
Unlike in Hollywood movies where one shot from a pistol kills the person immediately, in the real world it can take numerous shots from a pistol to stop them unless the heart or central nervous system (brain, spinal cord) is hit by a bullet. A mentally deranged and violent person can be almost immune to pain and absorb a number of bullets and still kill the police officer.
Many police departments don't have the funds for recurring marksmanship training, they fund for the annual or semi-annual qualification requirement of the officer and that is it. You will find that most police officers are mediocre to poor marksman due to the lack of training so one of them hitting a leg is going to be quite an accomplishment. Police officers are taught to shoot center of mass on a person because it is so difficult to hit a leg or arm on a person and the center of mass hit produces a faster stop to the aggression.

In the city where we lived before TV, a population of about 160,000, we had a gang problem for years. Everyone with a brain knew that but the mayor, city council and the police chief would vehemently deny there were gangs. In their pea brain minds they thought it would show weakness in their leadership if they admitted to the city having a gang problem. They finally had to admit to it, the crime level rose so much that it couldn't be denied any more. Politician and their hacks lie and obfuscate all the time for various reasons. Old saw, how do you know when a politician or bureaucrat is lying? When his lips are moving.

A Vietnam vet friend of mine related a story to me about a fellow soldier being shot in the leg. He had been hit in the femoral artery, a medic wasn't available, and they couldn't get the blood stopped. The soldier bled to death in just a couple minutes.

Since you are an expert what are those options. What does stand your ground have to do with a police officer in this situation? Apparently you don't know what "stand your ground" laws mean. If a person has a knife in their hands they are NOT unarmed and defenseless. A person with a knife can cause severe injuries and death to the person they are attacking. Back in the late 80's in Mexico there were more knife homicides than homicides by all means (knives, bludgeons, guns, feet, fists, etc.) in the United States so don't think a knife is a toy. Self defense is not murder. I didn't know that the police unions could suspend laws. If the police officer is guilty of a crime the union can't do anything about the officer being charged, tried and convicted. The union is not a court of law or above it.

Put yourself in the shoes of the Japanese that were institutionalized (to put it nicely) in camps during WWII. Put yourself in the shoes of the WHITE indentured servants that were before the black slaves. Sorry, but everyone has an excuse for bad behavior if they search for justification and rationalization. The law does not stipulate ethnicity. Believe me when I say that honest, law abiding Americans of any color or gender want law enforcement, not pity from those that feel they are better than them. If you wish to empathize with a minority, try empathizing with those that are law abiding and are embarrassed by the thuggery of the criminal element.
It IS true that society needs law enforcement. But, they want unbiased law enforcement, not shoot-em-up cowboys with disregard for human life. Most Police are fine individuals......but......there are some that are BAD apples, to begin with. There are some that become jaded after years in the job (that is almost human nature) and should be given desk jobs. And many departments are controlled by OVERLY strong unions. That has been mentioned on this forum before.

Both Police and Military individuals at all levels have a tendency when putting on a uniform to take on an attitude of superiority. They can lose sight of humility and empathy. There are exceptions of course but these particular individuals covet power over others and the uniform gives them that power. Not saying that it is everyone or even rampant, but it does happen. After History like Jim Crow and current events like the Floyd murder, Black and Brown people are afraid of Police in uniform. Also Kent State with respect to the military.

In the future, when robotic Police are perfected, the fear of harm to themselves will be eliminated. They can be programmed with techniques of social science also. In the meantime, the combination of bad Cops and civilians with mental problems will persist. It is a problem that needs to be solved. The US needs to look at other more successful countries for answers. But, that rarely happens!

In your "expert" opinion what should have been done? Send in a 100lb female social worker, a priest, a psychiatrist, or what? What makes you think he would respond reasonably to them when he was hostile and violent to family members?
