So sad to see this on Facebook earlier from a message from the Marion County Sheriff.

K-9 officers don't sign up for the life of danger they live. Every K-9 officer deserves to be treated with the same respect their human counterparts deserve. When a K-9 officer is killed in the line of duty, it was intentional on the part of the criminals. K-9 officer took one for his fellow officers and for the rest of us. The penalty should be huge.

In this case, the bad guy who shot Leo was shot and killed by officers. Had the bad guy survived, he would be subject to enhanced penalties. Killing a police dog is a 2nd degree felony, up to 15 years in prison.

That’s so very sad. He died in the line of duty. I raised a yellow lab that became a bomb squad dog. These dogs are as revered as their human counterparts. He will be buried with full honors. Thank you for your service Leo.
