Red face Need information re: electrical outlet

Hi, we own a villa (Arlington ) and am new here and getting furniture, etc, basically getting settled in. Our question is, in the Arlington model, the electrical outlet in the living room is in the floor. Is it safe to run the cord from a lamp under the couch? Thanks for any info. Kathy.

I believe the answer is yes, thats why the outlet is in the floor.
Running an extension cord under a rug without a protective raceway, would be the no, no.

Yes, it is safe...as long as nothing is pressing on the cord itself, like a furniture leg, etc. As was already said, running a cord under a rug without a protective raceway is dangerous, but just having a cord/plug under a sofa is fine. Just make sure no part of the cord is where people will walk, so it is not a tripping hazard.
The duplex receptacle on the floor is usually wired so that one of the outlets is constantly "on" and the other outlet is governed by the switch(es). This way if you have a sofa or chair run by electricity it could be on constantly, and you still have one outlet for a lamp that could be turned on/off by the switch(es).

Hope that helps!

Frank

That's exactly what the floor plug is designed for.

Suggestion if you could find a right angle plug to put on the end of what ever your plugging in it would also be a little safer, especially if it's under a chair or sofa. JMO
