Default Walnut Grove

We played Walnut Grove yesterday (Sunday) despite the chilly weather. Lots of cancellations so the course was practically all ours . Tee time was 11:14 so by then and full ☀️, it really wasn’t too bad.

I last “reviewed” this course back in April and it was impeccable at that time .

I don’t know what happened between then and now but much of the course is overgrown with weeds ! Some of the greens were peppered with weeds, the kind that will definitely affect putting .

Tee boxes were a mix of good and bad .

The course is a great layout and very challenging depending on which tee box is used.

Tough call on an overall rating. Maybe an C+ or B -

The grass is now entering the dormant winter phase. The courses up north are in much better shape then those in the southern area. I've seen worse. I played there last Thrusday.

It's the USGA plan. That is what the Golf operations individuals from the District who are responsible will say!

Looks like poa annua (annual bluegrass) that sprouts up and seeds in cooler weather. You can't kill it without killing all the grass around it. You can only use a seed suppressant and cut the grass frequently. Pebble Beach is full of poa annua and that is how they control it. Don't expect that kind of treatment here. It will die off when it gets hot. Good luck till next Summer.

Bummer, all 4 Executive courses up by Lopez have historically been in the best shape of the Villages Executive portfolio of tracks. I’ve been afraid this was coming. There has been a recent trend of transferring the best greens keeping crews to the southern areas, where new homes are being built. Oh well, we never waste any time worrying about the score we put up on the Executives, it’s just ball striking practice. The greens on the Executives are so inconsistent between courses, and so different from the Championships, they only throw off your game when you’re paying the big bucks to play. Let’s just hope that all the nice Championship courses in the northern sections of the Villages don’t go downhill fast as the proven greens keeping crews and managers get transferred south?

The poa annua seems to have spread to lots of our greens.

Walnut Grove is on the schedule for complete renovations in 2025 so I can only assume, “if we’re going to kill everything then why waste $$$ on maintenance now” Most complete renovations have started around February so they can be completed before the next snow bird season beginsl
