Marion County is not picking up storm debris from Hurricane Ian. Debris is accepted at all of the Marion County Recycling Centers and the Baseline Landfill. For specific requirements, call 352-671-8465.

So much for the announcement that FEMA would pay for the removal of all hurricane damage. Either that was another empty government promise, or Marion County isn’t interested or capable of doing the job.
If it’s like the last time FEMA was supposed to pick up palm fronds, etc., the trucks showed up for one day and then disappeared. The explanation from the owner of several of the specialized trucks was that the payments in the Keys were a lot higher, so all the trucks headed south. It was a couple months before the fallen fronds, etc. we’re picked up in The Villages.

They probably didn’t properly bid or didn’t bid this service so they could be reimbursed by FEMA. FEMA will not reimburse a local government if they piggy back a contract for this type of service. This should’ve been done way before hurricane season and they should’ve had at least three vendors under contract.

The Gazette article doesn't mention if this is inside our outside the Villages. Since Marion county does not provide residential trash pickup then it isn't surprising that they aren't offering storm debris pickup either. The latest District Bulletin had information on storm debris collection inside the Villages. I don't recall where I saw a statement about steps being taken to avoid a repeat of the less-than-desired service during Irma.

The latest district bulletin (dated 9/28/22), on page 3, states:
The Villages Community Development Districts utilize an emergency debris hauler who will mobilize immediately after storm-passage to assist Counties and local municipalities with clearing of roadways, and will then begin collecting debris from the right-of-way after the storm. The contractor will make multiple passes through all areas of The Villages to ensure all storm-related debris is collected. I would assume "all areas of The Villages" includes District 4, the Marion County section of TV. |
