Default Richmond Pitch&Putt. Good & Bad

Played there a few days ago to check out. We typically play Marshview P&P once per month.

First, really good to have more choices in TV for short game practice.

Richmond was very nice. Loved the rolling hills and contoured greens. And of course in great shape. Much more “challenging” than Marshview.

Nice little addition for those who prefer tees off the mats, there are small plastic tees holders for Left or Right inset into the mats. A few holes had three different mats for the holes over 100yards. Much of the course is close and adjacent to the Pike, so… noise. Nice that every green had arrow signs directing to next hole.

The only “Bad” IMO was only a few benches along the course. But the main negative was that the course, 18 holes is laid out where #9 is very far away from the starter and parking lot. So unlike Marshview if you want to play only 9 and you’re back to the Shack — you’re out of luck and need to walk all the way back. We did just that, as two of us were not feeling well. Hassle. Long walk back but now we know.

Other than that the course is great fun.

Played Richmond pitch & putt for the first time today.

The good:

Greens were in great shape. Putts ran quick and smooth. Marsh Bend greens are slow and choppy in comparison.

Course layout is straightforward.

The golf cart parking is good. Very short walk to the starter shack.

The bad:

Lots of soft/wet areas on the course.

Some of the holes are a little too close together. I accidentally overdrive one of the early holes and not by much and my ball ended up in the middle of another green while people were about to putt on it.

Some of the walkways between holes are rough and not really finished pathways.

Feels strange that after the 9th hole you're left far from the starter shack with no way to exit the course without playing the back 9, or walking all the way back. I'm sure that it's not uncommon for someone to decide they're not up to finishing the back nine due to time or not feeling well.

The group in front of me was 4 people + a "spectator". The spectator held up the pace of play by running around with a ball retriever trying to look for "free" golf balls on every hole that had a water hazard. Would be nice if there was a specific rule against this.

Overall:

Enjoyed the course and look forward to playing again.

I believe between 2-2:15 is around the average but really depends on the group(s) in front of you.

If the course is empty, you can do it in 90 minutes. If you have a foursome ahead of you that has never played before and putts out everything (I saw a woman take six putts from four feet - the last two from inside 1 foot) you are looking at three hours. I rarely play 18. There is usually a gap where the holes ahead of you are crowded and two or three holes are empty and you can just walk over and get ahead of the slow golfers.

Agree. We played there yesterday for first time. Other problem was very very slow group two holes in front of us. Had 3 different foursomes meeting up on hole behind them. They were clueless apparently that they were holding up play significantly. We finally walked around them up to next hole. 5 open holes in front of them! I get that Pitch n Putt courses are great for beginners, but please pay attention and pick up and skip a hole or two when you are that slow. At least one player (that we saw) would dribble it off the tee, go get it and tee off again, lining up show for about 2 minutes. I suspect more than 1 was doing this.

Maybe it would help if starter would tell people to notice if they are holding up play and what to do about it. Some people just don't know, especially if they are new golfers.

Especially agree about the lack of benches. When you are waiting for 10 minutes or more to tee off, you especially notice this.

They should also put an ambassador out there to keep things moving. Starter can't control pace of play other than giving directions at start of play that are ignored.

True "links style" couurses in Great Britian and here in the US have "outbound" and "inbound" nines, with sometimes a snack bar in between. Only the first and 18th holes are at the clubhouse. Maybe a good idea to put a bar between #9 and #10 at Richmond!
