Default Bunion Surgery (Lapiplasty)

Hello, Has anyone had a Lapiplasty to correct a Bunion. If so who did your surgery? Thank you for your response in advance.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone near TV doing that procedure, but...

The Lapiplasty (which is being advertised everywhere, it seems) is really no different from a Lapidus Procedure, which has been around for decades. I learned that procedure in residency almost 40 years ago... There are several other metatarsal osteotomy corrections, as well. They all have their place in your toolbok

The reason the Lapiplasty (which I believe is ™) is being advertised so much, is to get people to come in asking for the procedure. They use a proprietary jig and fixation set, that is a a "one time use" set and is quite expensive. Contrast that to the standard Zimmer ™ sets (which you can order individual replacement screws, plates, etc) and is much more cost effective.

Many hospitals are hesitant to order the Lapiplasty sets due to their costs, and it seems that many who are doing the procedure are doing them in their own Surgi-Centers, where their other costs are lower and they can make a profit on the sets.

That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the procedure. As long as you're experienced in doing it...

Be sure to ask anyone you see "How many of these have you done"?

I'm speaking as someone who has done 1,000s of bunionectomies...
