Wonder if we could buy it and make it Village of Skye and sell a few thousand homesites. Beautiful island.

Get that crowdfunding started, Stu. Under a million, so eight bucks each should do it.

Nah will buy the whole thing and sell off the lots. Might even find some local folks to construct the houses.

Now to find a thousand people or so to send in a deposit of say $ 500 each.

Forestry can make a great investment, often with tax benefits too when you pass it on to your descendants.

Sorry, Stu, but "Skye Villages" would be a non-starter in that rural location.

However, letting the trees grow (Skye gets plenty of rain!), getting grants for peatland restoration and maybe persuading a wind-farm operator to lease the high ground (Scotland is very keen on renewables) and you should get a reasonable return on your investment. Probably optimal to get those things going and "sell on" in five to ten years once you've done all of the heavy lifting.

So, to whom shall I send my $500 deposit?

Darn wanted to be a feudal landlord. Wish you would have told me about this 20 years ago though.
