Default Tax Question

Assuming a job search expense to be legitimate - if you paid for airfare and hotel using points how would you convert those points to a cash value?

If you earned the miles from actual flying or through credit card rewards, they generally are not taxable. Therefore, I don't believe you have any way to covert them to cash value to in turn deduct as an expense.
