Default Missing dollar

Three friends pay $30 for a hotel room ($10 each). The receptionist realized that it should have been $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return. The bellboy gives $1 back to each friend and keeps $2 for himself. Now, each friend paid $9 ($27 total) and the bellboy kept $2. Where is the missing dollar?

There is no missing dollar. 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 5. Each guest paid 9 dollars. You are assuming that the bellboy paid 2 dollars, which is not true. The bellboy paid nothing.

If you want to account for the 30 dollars, you need to add up all of the money received. The hotel received 25 dollars, the guests each received 1 dollar and the bellboy received 2 dollars. 25 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 30.

Sounds right. It seemed to depend on the assumptions we make.

If the room should have been $25 then they each would have paid $8.333, not $10. The $.333 times 3 is where the dollar went.
