Smile Stock Market Predictions for 2014

This morning, Dec. 29, 2013, Joel Garis, on WFLA, predicted the Dow Jones industrial average will close-out 2014 at 17,600.

I thought his reasoning was good as he stated the economy will continue to improve but that we should not expect the same big gains as we have had this year.

If anything, he might have been a little too optimistic. So my prediction is for the Dow Jones to close at 17,550. How's that for playing it safe?

Give your prediction and at the end of 2014 we can bring this thread back to see who wins a gold star.

Thank you.

Predictions on the stock market are about as reliable as long range weather forcasts.

Darn! It seems I forgot to say that it's just for fun. I didn't think anyone would take it seriously. Louis Rukeyser used to do it every year on his TV show.

"Long Range"? I'd go as far as saying as (un)reliable as short range weather forecasts.

OK, that said I am going to give no rhyme or reason for my guess……drum roll please……17,936 (it was above 18,000 but fell back under at the end of the year).

Where will I pick up my trophy?

I'm going to be optimistic and go with 19,500.
As an aside, I'm rolling the dice and leaving myself "all in".

These forecasts are right behind or just ahead of number of hurricanes on the list of accuracy!

He's an investment advisor who has a one hour radio show on Sunday mornings starting a 9:00 am. He talks about the stock market and people call in to ask questions. I don't know what the "W" stands for. I think FLA stands for Florida. They are the call letters of the radio station. It would be 540 on your AM radio dial.

After today and the start to the year in general I'd like to take back my guess.

last year the market did well in spite of the down in the dumps economy and unemployment.

This year the prospects for the economy are worse and unemployment will not be any better if not worsening after all the part time jobs disappear.

Even the stock market can't ignore a pending disaster for too long.

17,734 - Still pretty good but nothing like 2013.

there is humor in the fact this thread has been relagated to the "just for fun"
forum?!
