Smile Lawn Aeration

Any recommendations regarding someone who does lawn aeration at a reasonable price?

Don't waste your money.
You'll be aerating the little bit of topsoil the sod was grown in followed by sand.

I agree. I called a reputable company today as I felt that there were some compact spots in our lawn that is a year old. I was told that they do not even offer aeration service as the lawn in on sand. I was advised to follow a good fertilization plan and the lawn will thrive.

Sent you a private message, however, I feel I should tell anyone who doesn't think its a waste of money, that Adam Neusbaum does a fantastic job aerating. I believe his charges $69.00 (at least last year that was his charge) no matter what size lawn you have.
We had ours done and compared to most landscaping companies, his job is far superior.
His number is 1-855-932-3728.
I'm not sure of all his services, but I know he also lays pine straw and cow manure.

I STRONGLY disagree! Our home was built 11/11, & our lawn was not thick & very spotty. I wasn't happy. I had our lawn care co. aerate & fertilize twice in a yr. (cost was a total of $160.00). They aerated 5/13 & 11/13. NOW in fact when I cut my grass I remove my solar spotlights that I use to light up my trees; I need a screw drive to reposition these lights in the turf.!!! That's how THICK my grass is (Zoysia).

Paperboy -- Trust me . . . if your grass is in great condition, it is because of the fertilization, not the aeration.

There are many beautiful lawns throughout the Villages and they are thick and green because of the fertilization only and the proper cutting height.

Stop paying for the areation for a year and I will bet you that you won't see any difference.
You will still have a beautiful lawn

I don't have a feeling one way or another. But my question is why do the Golf Courses do it. The greens are nothing but sand.

Answer that one Bonanza!
I think that golf courses know what they are doing.

I really can't answer why golf courses aerate the courses, but they all do it, regardless where they are in the country. It's a common practice.
I will tell you that the two grasses that you find on our golf courses are not what we have for our lawn.
I'm sure that has everything to do with it.

And no . . . I don't know everything!
I'm still learning.

I just have been given some info specifically regarding thatching zoysia grass.
This information was originally posted by "Mrsanborn."

After raking this tiny yard with a bow rake, I put 9 bags of thatch to the curb. I use a mulching mower. Read the following and decide for yourself. I do have one recommendation. Hire someone to do it.

"Zoysia grass is normally dormant and brown during the winter.

Zoysia grass (Zoysia spp.) is a warm-season turf species prized for its drought tolerance and an ability to withstand heavy traffic and slight shade well. A healthy zoysia grass lawn will be quite dense, which allows it to handle wear and avoid weed problems. Zoysia grass lawns do tend to produce excessive thatch, the layer of living grass stems tangled with dead plant material that accumulates between the soil surface and the green portion of the grass stems. Thinning this thatch layer regularly will help maintain turf vigor.

About Thatch
A thin thatch layer is beneficial, helping to conserve soil moisture and limit weed seed germination. However, where a thatch layer more than about 1/2 inch thick develops it can block air, moisture and nutrients from efficiently reaching grass roots. A thick thatch layer leaves the turf vulnerable to scalping, drought stress and invading weeds. It can also encourage pests and fungal problems.

Dethatching Timing and Frequency
Dethatching is generally warranted whenever a thatch layer is more than 1/2 inch thick. A thick thatch layer will give the lawn a bouncy feel. If your lawn exhibits scalping or unexpected drought stress symptoms, check the depth of the thatch layer. Zoysia grass will recover from dethatching best when it is actively growing in mid-to-late spring or early fall and generally benefits from annual dethatching. If you plan to apply pre-emergent herbicide, wait until after dethatching to avoid disrupting the herbicide."
