Does anyone have an avocado tree in their yard? Just wondering if they will grow here and what they look like.

I grew up in Central Florida and had plenty of avocado trees.

I was just looking at them on youtube and they are not a very attractive tree. I think I'll continue buying the avocados at the store.

I have one on our lanai that I started from a pit. It is almost 5 feet tall. Haven't decided if I want to put it outside.

Does it have fruit? On youtube they said to not start them from the pit because they are a grafted tree and won't do as well as a nursery tree.

May I ask what type of avacado are you growing green or haas?

we had one in our backyard in Dade Co. that was more than 60 feet tal. it produced hundreds of avocados but impossible to pick them. they fall when ripe and the fruit rats got most of them. the few we got were delicious

Got one I grew from a pit I in the back yard - 4 years old and20' tall. No fruit yet

When I first found them at Home Depot I was so excited as I love avocados but common sense took over and I called the local expert at county extension and he told me it would have to be covered from frost so unless we had a really tall birdcage it would be very difficult to cover as they get so tall. Alas, I passed it up. Sure would like to have one though!

My tree is located amid other tall trees/plants in the rear/exterior of our birdcage. It DID get frost bitten on the exposed top branches, and they have died, fallen off. Vigorous new growth has replaced the frosted ones. I have two other small trees coming along (grown from pit) as I read more than one tree is necessary to get fruit. Four years and counting, although don't see any fruit yet.
