Does anyone know where I can buy the black aluminum square stock used in the lanais? I want to make a planter out of cedar and the square stock.

Homeowners sometimes enclose the lanai so the aluminum is removed and my guess is that it's sold off by the pound to a scrapyard. Is there a scrapyard nearby?

I know I could use the yellow pages and google but my hunch is that someone else knows first hand where to go.

They do sell it in Home Depot and I think lowes. I don't think the lengths are very expensive. You should be able to go to their web site and find the pricing.
