As you face the mailboxes at Tamarind Grove, on the right-hand side in the landscaping is a tree that has no leaves on it, but is flowering like crazy with pinkish-lavender flowers that look kind of like open tulips. Does anyone know what the name of that tree is?

It could be a Tulip Tree, but it is way too early for a Tulip Tree to bloom. The warm weather we have been having may have forced it into bloom, but this cold weather is not doing it any favors. Do a computer search on Tulip Tree and you will get loads of information.

I don't think so. The flowers are very large and not all one solid color. And it is a tree, except no leaves. I can't tell if it's an oddity happening in a micro climate or if it's supposed to be that way, but I love it. And I want one!

Thanks, I will. The flowers do look like tulips. And it does look like it's not supposed to be flowering somehow.

I didn't notice that tree before, and I don't recall seeing others like it around. I probably will now though.

I am not familiar with the tulip tree but I'm thinking that CFrance's tree is a type of magnolia named "Saucer".

We were recently at the Bok Gardens and there were many trees like this. Beautiful flowers with no leaves. Looked very odd.

Agree....probably a japanese magnolia. We have a couple of them in our yard (in north Florida) and they do bloom even when all leaves are gone - sometimes a lot of blooms...sometimes not so many. It probably does depend upon the climate.

It is a Saucer Magnolia. We had them up North.
Goes dormant in the fall, blooms on bare wood in 'the spring', then glossy leaves appear after blooming. Lovely tree.

Yes, I think that's it, although it's a much smaller tree (younger, I suspect) and the flowers are a little more muted. It is very pretty. Anyone finding themselves near the Tamarind Grove mailboxes should go have a look.

I see that it has fewer flowers on it now. Is it flowering out of season because of the recent warm weather? Is it unusual for it not to have any leaves on it when flowering? Thanks for the pics!

Yes, it is a magnolia tree. We have alot of them up in Wisconsin and they do bloom before the leaves appear. It's unusal for the flowers to last as long as they do here because in the spring we have rain and strong winds that blow the flowers off. You're fortunate to be able to enjoy them for so long.
