Question Irrigation System is Going Crazy!

We haven't moved to TV yet and are having the house watched by a reliable lady. The landscaping is mostly stone with a tiny patch of grass. We got our water bill for last month and it says we used 7,000 gallons of water! What in the world can be going on!

Called the house watcher and she will be looking into it, of course. But she said she sees no water gushing out anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Is it a new..NEW house or a new..previously loved house?

If it is a new, new house the warranty people could check it for you.

If you have a Hunter Irrigation control unit in the Garage, it has 3 program controls and you need to make certain you check all 3 programs for when the irrigation system is scheduled to run ..and for how long. In the upper left hand corner of the screen there is a very small 1, 2, or 3 designating the program. People use these programs for certain days (program 1) they water the entire lawn, but then only the front sprinklers go on 2 days later (program 2), and the back sprinklers go on 4 days later (program 3).

This is the usual cause for un-expected watering bills unless you have a leak

Have just discovered a different problem.

When we had all that rain a couple weeks ago, I actually went out and turned off my system. Then, when I decided to start it up again, there was no eveidence that it had worked (programmed from 1:00 am - 6:00 am) for about three cycles.

Had Massey come yesterday to see what. Since I'm going away for a couple of weeks, I was afraid I'd come home to a completey browned out lawn.

Reprogrammed, but unsuccessfully. Diagnosed a faulty controller. Replacing it next week. The word is that the new controller will be capable of more "automatic" adjustment to when, how much, etc.

joaniesmom - we had a bad set of the zone controllers [or whatever they are called - besides expensive!] in our back yard - they'd go on and run until they decided to stop rather than what had been set on the timer - a mind of their own - or taken over by evil spirits? had to have new ones installed - and now they are very well behaved!

We are fairly new to TV. We've been here 6 weeks. Our first water bill was nearly $300.00 (We realize part of this is our amenity fee.) We program our system to water once a week, but will come home on an evening it's not suppose to be on and find it watering the yard. We've had the irrigation people here 4 times checking our system and they say there is nothing wrong with it!! Apparently, regardless of what amount of time we set it to run, it resets itself every night at midnight, based on humidity and the amount of rain we've had. Our system runs 3-1/2 to 4 hrs each time it comes on!

It certainly sounds like your controller has another program running at different times. Our controller can have up to three programs (A, B, and C) active on different schedules. If yours is like that, then I am surprised that an irrigation specialist would not know how to disable the additional programs. I can understand a homeowner not knowing how, since it is somewhat complicated to program to set up.

Do you have the owner's manual? Can you call the manufacturer? Otherwise, try a different irrigation contractor, maybe someone who is recommended by the Villages Warrantee Dept.
