The palm fertilizer, 8-2-12-Lesco has long acting forms of ingredients and it has the appropriate amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, boron, etc. Having the name Lesco on the bag is not enough. You need to make sure it says 8-2-12 (has 4% magnesium) The new bag says on the label “Lesco 8-2-12 Opti. Lesco Palm and Tropical Ornamental Fertilizer, This product Contains 100% Poly Plus.”
Well, that's great, pay more and feel good for the 8-2-12. I have 6 big palms, tons of smaller (ie: European, Sugar, etc) and do the work myself. They all have done great for 10+ years now

Below a palm tree nursery says 13-3-13 (-4 magnesium) is a fine ratio, which is what Home Depot sells in the Lesco

You can use all kinds of fertilizers for your palm trees. People use Milorganite, Black Kow, epsom salts, etc. with varied results. If it works that is great. I was just going with the University of Florida recommendations that specify using long acting forms of ingredients, such as magnesium (in the form of Kieserite) and iron. (In the form of chelated iron) Lesco has a number of formulations and the prices differ. Longer acting ingredients cost more to produce. The reason to use long acting ingredients instead of water soluble formulations is because of the heavy rains we have here in Central Florida. What can happen is that you fertilize on June 1, it rains heavily for two days, and then all the magnesium and iron, etc. are washed away and the palm develops nutrient deficiencies. Use what you like though. If your palms look good keep doing what you do!

I hired this company. The owner of the company is a certified arborist. He saved my 12-ft dying Sylvester Palm; and gave me guidance on caring for the tree, so as to prevent the situation from happening again. It cost close to $400, but was worth every single penny. My Sylvester is bouncing back and looking more green than ever!

Be careful of Tree Frog. They are good, but very expensive for the services they provide.
