Default Palm Trees

Being from the midwest we are not at all familiar with palm trees but love the look of them when we visit Florida, Mexico, etc. When looking at used Villages homes, I tend to look at those with more mature landscaping that includes larger palm trees...my question is ~ what are the bad things to know about having palm trees around?

We've been told that "critters" (bugs, snakes, rats{?} etc) love to live in them! I don't know if that's true but just to be safe we're not going to plant them in our yard--will let the neighbors do that and we'll enjoy from afar. Also, some are more sensitive to the frost that we sometimes can get here in the winter so won't make it. Will be interested to see what others have to say.

Default I may change. We may plant them on our lot.

I am not sure why I am not a big fan of palm trees in my yard. It could well be because they cost so much, or because they are supposed to be home to palmetto bugs (is that true?) or because our house here kinda looks like a midwestern house and I kinda like that.

I love to look at them all around me and love to paint pictures with them and think they are beautiful.

I have heard that they have small root balls and can fall over but I haven't seen any falling over. I also have heard that the only ones that really, really, really can withstand frost are planted in the common areas by the Morse bunch because they are SO expensive.

It must be because I am thrifty. Call that tight.

I have several sago palms (short) here and they are quite hardy. They have survived below freezing and I've not noticed any bugs but maybe that's because of location differences. although the latitude is about the same along the Gulf Coast. I think the bugs are mostly in the palmettos.

Don't have a palm touching your roof. That's how palm rats and other little creatures get into your attic.

The queens seem susceptible to falling over, snapping and winter damage. If I had it to do all over again, I would only plant canary, sylvester, european fan, pindo, sabal and washingtonians in my yard. The canary palm is my hands down favorite.
