The gardening store said to move them inside when it gets to 40 degrees. I guess that means they are tropical plants. We don't mind moving them inside as they're in large pots in the birdcage.

I would go with the 50 degree warning with the heleconia. Had 2 in pots outside and they are pretty much zapped right now. Of course a lanai is a little more sheltered, but they really are tropical and need to be kept warm. Enjoy them - I love heleconia - you can buy a small one at Home Depot in the spring and it will grow like crazy under the right conditions.

Barefoot - did your heliconia make it through the winter? Did you put them back outside before you left???
