Recently I got a call from the company who takes care of my lawn at my patio villa. He said that I have a fungus most likely caused by over watering. I bought my house new in Dec 2011 and haven't been there since April. When I was there I was told because of the drought that I was watering to much so I adjusted my irrigation system to the required once a week for 20 minutes. My lawn guy says fungus is caused by over watering especially with all the rain we have had. My question to others who own patio villas what is the frequency that you water your lawn and for how many minutes each watering? My lawn guy says I should be watering twice a week for 12 minutes each time. Appreciate any help.

Since you are in buttonwood, you probably have zoysia grass. The correct criteria is not how often, but how much. One deep watering per week is best. Zoysia website says 1" per week during the growing season. Put a tuna can on the lawn, and water til full. Check the time, and set the timer. The 1" seems to work for bedded plants also.

I think the current water restriction is once per week. We have our Homewatch Company adjust our System. Of course watering isn't required at all if it rains every day or two.

Bob, you might want to have somebody check out your rain sensor to make sure it's functioning properly. I checked ours the last time we were in TV............and found out it was set incorrectly. A monsoon wouldn't have caused the irrigation system to skip a cycle! It was functioning properly - just set wrong.

Fungus can be treated with a spray or granular product from Home Depot. It can be caused by to much water. I have also heard it can be spread by a lawnmower blade. If a lawn service cuts a lawn with fungus and then cuts yours it is possable to spread the fungus.

Here is the current instruction set for the rain sensor on our system:

(Note that the 2 pages of the pdf are displayed in reverse order......for whatever reason!)

I think this is for a newer version of the device we have - I don't believe ours includes the "vent ring" that is mentioned. We're not in TV or I'd check the actual paper manual we have at the house to verify. Otherwise, this instruction set seems to be the same.

Our home was built in '07 - I have no idea if the TV builders use different irrigation systems or different brands/models of rain sensors.

I had the same fungus thing, think it was picked up from the landscaper. I mixed some Dawn (the blue one) in a bucket with water, schmoozed it around on the spots, solved the problem.

Isn't Dawn handy? I find it useful for lots of things. Even washing dishes!

The thing I like the best about Dawn is that it is used to degrease suffering marine animals when they become covered in oil due to the actions of the ........ well, I won't even finish this.

And if you dye your hair black by mistake, it will remove some of the color. Whoops, sorry for the hijack!
