Took the gamble, and planted two Beef Steak tomatoe plants on the 29nth of Jan. (about 1 ft long) Wrapped plastic around plants with four stakes, to keep wind out and cold. So far, doing well. Will plant two more in two weeks. Usually by March, it gets warmer and will take plastic off. Yummy

your florida grown tomatoes will not taste the same as tomatoes that are grown up north - tomatoes grown in a sandy soil are not the same as the soil up north and lose a lot of taste - some places have great water some have good air quality etc and some have good soil ---- florida soil is not good for growing tomatoes but good luck and enjoy - just dont be disappointed

Years ago, I used the Wall O' Water products for early planting up North. They worked like a charm.

If sandy soils are so lousy for tomato plants, then how come the tomatoes grown in New Jersey are the best???

i think if the soil sandy or not has the right PH and you leave it on the vine till it fully rip it will taste good. Hot house or store brought tomato's are picked green. As with any fruit or veggie vine ripping alows all the natural sugars the last few days when they turn. This IMO differents in taste. Were I live I sometimes have to pick before deed red due to the birds will peck them... I sometime grow Yellow or orange tomato's to fool the birds.
"O" by the way Midwest Tomato's taste the best ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Why don't they sing about Jersey
Where the sun shines all the time? Why do they sing about Dixie And the girls from the Caroline? The girls from Georgia are peaches. And the girls from Texas ain't slow. But why don't they sing about Jersey Where the great big tomatoes grow (You 'oughta see 'em!), Where the great big tomatoes grow? William Keller

Tomatoe plants have been in since 29nth of January and are doing real well. (about 1 3/4 ft already. I wrapped plastic around four stakes and they are nice and warm and moist. Once frost is done, I will take plastic off.
