Talking about irrigation of course.
Since the grass growth is slowing down, have you cut back to once a week watering? And, is there still a need to keep watering the lawn during Dec-Feb? I have St. Augustine lawn. Thanks.

The roots still need water. Less than summer two lighter watering a a week should be enough. Unless it does not rain then two normal watering a is needed.

What I do, is cut down my times on each station to half of what I have on during peak season, and still have two waterings a week. Flower beds can always use a little drink.

15 years here and have NEVER watered more than once a week. Lawn looks as good as others that water 2 or more times.

adequately hydrated plants do much better in the cold weather than de-hydrated ones. that said, common sense should prevail. if your drainage is slow and you have a lot of clay then less water would be needed. irrigate by need, not by convenience or calendar.

the problem here in FL is there is no soil. We are all attempting to grow a lush lawn on a sand dune. And apparently willing to spend big bucks to do so....water....chemicals....etc.

Almost 9 years ago we landscaped with several tropical plants. We watered and fed the lawn to have a great looking lawn.
Fast forward to today. The 20 degree days has long since killed the tropical plants. Now we replace the tropical with the local, cold weather hardy plants only.

In the last 4 years we have had our entire lawn re-sodded twice. Once I paid for and a year later the second was replacement by the guy who did the first one (because he did it the wrong time of the year and it did not take).

Have a consistent good looking lawn here is figting the odds. Sand does not hold water very well, hence water a lot. Fungus, cinch bugs and untold other grass killing bugs is an ongoing battle.

Now my answer to once or twice a week. Once per week year round. What dies or starts to look crappy gets cut out and made into a rock/plant/decorative pottery display. I now look forward to expanding those areas during the year and reducing my expenses along the way with less grass to grow on that sand dune.

Just got my irrigation bill and noticed we got a 2.5% increase in water, sewer and irrigation base rates & usage charges effective Oct. 1, 2012. My bill increased $48.00.

I may need to cut back on irrigation use to once a week.

I looked back through my bills to June 2011. On Oct. 1, 2011, we also got a 2.5% increase in water, sewer and irrigation base rates. A $.98 increase in the trash charge was effective 3-1-12, and a 10% water rate surcharge increase as of 3-10-12.

I can see the cost of water to be really expensive going forward!!!!
