Default Diagnostic testing numbers?????

I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea what all my 'numbers' mean. Until recently whenever I have gone to the Dr. they always say that my numbers are fine....so I have never bothered to figure out what they were. NOW in my old age (59) i am starting to have some issues. My question is....is there any class that gives you the basic understanding of what the numbers are, or what they should be? Seems like somewhere around The Villages someone would be able to help me???

They are talking about cholesterol, blood pressure, sugar level...all the basic stuff. I always ask for a copy of any blood work, so I can compare to previous.

Always ask for a printed copy of your lab report. It should have an acceptable range for each item noted. If you're not sure what each item is, a quick internet search for the term will always lead you to an appropriate description.

When in doubt on any of them, it would always be best to consult with your physician.

Here's a link to the results you should be looking for in the four most common tests.
Chlorestorol, HDL, LDL and trigylcerides.
Your doctor should have your results so you can compare.

There a lot more to the numbers than has been discussed here. The focus here seems to be on lipid panels (Cholesterol) but there are also numbers involving kidney, liver blood tests and more. It all depends on what your doctor orders.

Bill was right in that you should ask your doctor for a copy of the lab results. You can then check your readings and compare them to the acceptable range. If any reading are off, your doctor may already make notes for you about them, but if they don't, you can ask your doctor about them.

As for classes, I've never heard of any. What little I've checked out I've used the internet. Just be careful of what source you use. Here is one that I think may be helpful:

Understanding Routine Lab Test Results - Lab Test Errors, Abnormalities -AARP

Note: Use AARP information for eductional purposes. The ranges may not be current with AMA panel or coincide with those of the lab doing your tests. Consult with your physician for any concerns you have.
