I am a 70 year old Male and I had my PSA numbers all of a sudden go through the roof. I went to a local urologist and he told me I needed a biopsy. Fortunately for me I have a friend that was a surgeon for many years and he told me “do not do under any circumstances a biopsy” “it is not accurate, it’s invasive and unnecessary” that the only reason they do them is because they make a small fortune on each patient.

So being in the healthcare field I immediately did research to find out what the situation really is and what I found out is a biopsy is 64% effective and the MRI 3T prostate exam is 94% effective and it’s completely non-invasive.

Please don’t be fooled by the urologist pushing invasive biopsies they make a small fortune on these and they make nothing on an MRI 3T prostate exam.

Please know there are more then 20 reasons for a high PSA and only ONE is cancer.

As to take antibiotic my PSA suddenly mine went up and last year it was normal Dr prescribed an antibiotic for 2 weeks PSA went back to normal

Mine went way up. Told to retest. It came down to acceptable level and has remained there.

There may be 20 reasons for a high psa, but the one reason to be concerned is cancer.A mri which shows positive for possible cancer followed by a biopsy should be the course of action.I was put under for the biopsy and never felt a thing. I’m glad my urologist made the extra money because I had cancer and if he hadn’t it would have spread, and in stead of months to live I now have years ahead to look forward to.

My PSA was a little high (7) so my Urologist prescribed Proscar for 6 months. As of last checkup it had gone down to 4.2.

Several years ago mine went from.4 to 9.2 in a six-month period. The Doctor said this was highly unusual and gave me an antibiotic for two weeks and then another two weeks before a new blood test at a different lab. The new results on the final blood test were .4. It looks like someone mislabeled the vial. What a month that was. I usually don't worry but that entire scene really threw me for a loop. Best of luck with your situation.

I get tested every six months and all is well as of now.

Do an MRI first and if it shows a need, than follow up with a biopsy. The exception would be if a lesion can be felt doing a digital rectal exam. If that is the case, go straight to the biopsy. Unfortunately, the doctor can only feel about 40% of the prostate during the manual exam, but the MRI can image the whole organ

You being in the medical field, perhaps you'd explain what you mean by the word "effective". I used to think that when you said something was effective you had to explain at accomplishing what? Effective at saving money? Effective at ruling out cancer? Effective at ruling in cancer? Effective at staging cancer? Effective at reducing complications or pain? So what does it mean when you use the word? As far as I know a biopsy is 100% effective at removing a sample of tissue.

Was your friend who "was a surgeon" an expert in urology or oncology? Did he keep up to date on the options and methods of diagnosis of prostate cancer? If he felt doing biopsies had no value other than lining the pockets of urologists, what technique did he recommend to diagnose prostate cancer? Reading tea leaves? Tarot cards? Coin toss? And you being in the medical field can certainly answer these questions.
