Default Diabetes help?

I have a family member whose diabetes is very out of control. Her doctor has been unable to control it, and referred her to a local endocrinologist, who was unclean, unprofessional, and rude. Does anyone know of a GOOD endocrinologist or a good diabetes clinic where she can get help? Also, does anyone know of a support group? Her blood sugar readings will kill her, or worse. I'm afraid she's losing hope. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

I don't have a name for you. However my provider referred me to Monroe Heart for diabetes classes. They're now located off from 441 behind Aldi's. You could call them and ask if they can tell you of a good person she could go to.

BTW...the classes were excellant in training/teaching folks how to manage their diabetes etc. But they were taught by nurses

Several people have recommended Dr. Hamilton Fish.

Try this link:

I second the recommendation of Dr Hamilton Fish. He hasn't been treating me for diabetes, but I've been going to him for over 12 years for a thyroid condition. Obviously, I like him a lot.

Has your relative tried losing weight? My sister was diagnosed with early onset diabetes and was able to reverse this condition by losing weight, changing her diet and exercising.

Lightbulb Joslin Clinic

As I mentioned in other notes I really believe in going to the best when we
need medical treatment. I have diabetes and have it pretty much under control BUT if I did not I would call the Joslin Clinic in Boston and ask if they have a referral here or/and if affordable make an appointment to be examined by them and get their input/directions.

We have used the Monroe diabetic classes and nutrion. Very good. Our insurance covered it too.

If none of these solutions work...depending on your relative's weight and ability tto handle surgery - a gastric bypass cures diabetes type 2. Granted, this is a radical solution, and researchers are still researching why,; but, insurance companies are starting to cover the surgery for this purpose.

It's just an option.

Gastric bypass is an option for some but not for her due to other health concerns. And someone very close to me had gastric bypass solely to "cure" their diabetes, and it didn't work. They came off of insulin but are still on oral diabetes meds and still have to deal with it every day, even with their weight down to 105 lbs! Sadly, gastric bypass surgery only cures diabetes about 80% of the time.

Parker - I didn't know that...I was told it always had that effect and sure did for me....but, my reason for the bypass was the old fashioned one (down 145 lbs) and though it is not the easiest thing to deal with...still, it extended my life.

Being a type II diabetic. I just want to say you never cure diabetes but you can bring it under control. My doctor said it's like being an alcoholic but you can't drink again. He drew the anology that you can't eat the way I use to.

I'm sure every case is different and that's why a good doctor is needed to prescribe the right course of treatment for a individual.

I'm glad to hear the comparison of poor diet with alcoholism. I believe it's a very accurate comparison. Some people are addicted to processed (or refined) foods the way alcoholics are addicted to alcohol.

The difference is: When it comes to alcoholism everyone seems to know that you can't play around with it. A reformed alcoholic can't take an occasional drink. But when it comes to diet, dietitions and others (those who should know better) advise dieters to go ahead and eat what they crave, as long as they do it in moderation.

Paleo/primal eating is supposed to do wonders for diabetics.
