Question Genetic Testing

I was reluctant to write this note since I am not sure it would be appropriate but decided that if it helped one person it was well worth it. At the present time we are going thru some Cancer concerns of which Mayo Clinic has been the driving force in helping us. As a base point Mayo saves tissue for 10 years after surgery. And we had surgery in 2017 for the cancer. Although we are using an experimental chemo drug presently for the cancer which is a very small lesion Mayo has gone a major step forward which I am passing on in case anyone else is considering various options for their care. Mayo is using a Company "Foundation Medicne" to further determine the best approach to this cancer. In this case the Company farms tissue from the surgery, "does full Genomic testing of the cancer to identify the various DNA mutations in the cancer that drives that particular cancer growth identifying any useful mutation against which targeted therapy may be applied." In our case Mayo is also using this approach to further help stop the small lesion cancer from growing. Not sure if this is helpful for others but felt it may be useful in some cases?

It is so exciting to hear about all the recent advances in cancer treatment vis a vis genetic testing. There is a lot of cancer in my family (sibs as well as parents and their sibs) and a couple years ago I had genetic testing done to see if I had Lynch Syndrome (which causes lots of different types of cancers, often in very young adults) or any other known genetic mutations related to cancers. They didn't find anything but suggested that I consider retesting down the road, as they are identifying new things all the time.

Good luck, PennBF, with your treatment.

Kathy's answer is mine also. I think the future for Cancer to be overcome is in the field of genetics. I did not have Br-7 but still fourteen women relatives have had some form or another of breast cancer. I wish I could live another twenty years and see this to fruition. Wishing you health.
