Default Breast Cancer Surgeon?

My wife was devastated this afternoon to learn her breast biopsy of the lump in her left breast is breast cancer. She is seeing her GYN next week to select cancer specialists. Can anyone recommend a breast surgeon and an oncologist, preferably in the Leesburg/Tavares area, since we live in the south end of The Villages. Also recommendations on a radiation/chemo facility would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I'm very sorry for your wife's diagnosis. May she be treated successfully and recover rapidly!

As a Home Health Care RN, we see many patients of Dr Mascarenhas and they seem to do very well. His treatment seems to be a little different than other surgeons we see in the area. His office is located in the Tavares/Eustis area and he operates at Waterman hospital. His patients seem really happy with him. And don't forget Moffett Cancer Center in Tampa. I understand this is devastating to your wife presently, but tell her we see many more positive outcomes than negative in this day and age. And above all remember , positive thinking and prayer works wonders. God Bless and best of luck as you begin to travel this road. There is light at the end. (You can Google his name and you will find his practice and reviews + background/training, etc. He uses a procedure called SAVI which is a 5 day treatment of radiation, directly into the site of the tumor. There are a few factors that determine if this is the correct procedure for a particular patient, and he will discuss this with you.)

That is not news you wish to hear. I wish your wife the very best of outcomes!! I would suggest you get her to Moffitt Cancer Center on the campus of The University of South Florida in Tampa or The University of Florida Davis Cancer Center in Gainesville. I do not believe that complex medical issues are best left to the small group of medical specialists practicing in our rural back woods.

Dr. Celia Nelson.
Did my wife's breast cancer surgery. She is one of the most humble, competent caring medical experts we have ever met. All the way from pre op through surgery and after care.

We also used after care specialists at Inter Community Cancer Center.
9 years and cancer free!!

I wish your wife (and you) the best outcome of this horrible news. 4 1/2 years ago I received the same news so I know how scary it is. I went to Dr. Mascarenhas to do my surgery and I agree that he was fantastic. He did recommend the SAVI treatment of 5 or 7 days of localized radiation that I had done at Intercommunity Cancer Center, who was also wonderful. My oncologist is Dr. Tummala in Leesburg (and the villages) and as I head towards my five year clean mark, I will continue to see Dr. Tummala's PA, Susan, forever. I must admit of all the problems with doctors I have had in The Villages, my cancer treatment was the best experience considering how scary the whole idea was to me. I did reach out to BTK because I knew of his wife's successful treatment, so I highly recommend to reach out to other women in this area to hear of their experiences. God knows, there are so many of us now.

Good luck and God Bless your wife and I hope her experience is as good as mine.

My wife did a lot of research when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She ended up at Moffitt in Tampa and Dr. Kiluk. Absolutely the best choice she could have made.

Part of his bio on Moffitt's web site:

Dr. John Kiluk is a surgical oncologist specializing in breast cancer in The Center for Women’s Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center. He was voted by his patients and peers as Moffitt's Physician of the Year in 2011.

Dr. Nelson is a wonderful surgeon. She is the doctor of choice for many women in this area with breast cancer.

There is a Tri-County Breast Cancer support group that meets regularly on the 3rd Thursday of the month. They are meeting at Paradise rec center at 2 pm on the 18th. We are women who have been "there", support each other, and understand. Please join us...we're all sisters.

Gainesville is WAAY over an hour drive from the south end of The Villages. I would recommend a closer hospital, but my mom did not have a good outcome with Dr. Nelson.

I just heard about this group. My mom and I are thinking about coming. She needs some advice and support.

Thank you.

My wife's oncologist is Dr. Thaper at Florida Cancer Specialist in Leesburg. Wonderful doctor, after six months she is now cancer free but will continue follow ups with him. On your first appointment he will give you both his cell phone number to call him anytime 24/7. We used it several times on the weekends. He always picked up knew her and helped. Her radiation doctor was Dr. Kamath at the now Florida Cancer Ceter at the Villages hospital (was Moffatt). Good luck and you'll be in our prayers.

Relying on her OB-GYN recommendation, my wife has selected Dr. Bundz of Leesburg and is now awaiting her MRI and PET Scan before surgery and reconstruction. All prayers greatly appreciated throughout the journey.
