Default How do the vegans get their daily B12

After reading the following from the Mayo Clinic website, I was wondering how vegans get their Vitamin B12 ? A daily vitamin supplement?

It's quite long but worth reading......

Vitamin B12 - MayoClinic.com

I was curious as when my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimers, her physician experimented with thyroid meds but then stopped them; he also tried Aricept which gave her symptoms of anorexia......so stopped that.

She ate very little, so I was wondering , after reading this, could she have been deficicient in B12.

Too late now, however, it is interesting how B12 does impact many illnesses.......just wondering about the vegan diet / vegetarian diet?

I can't take the time to read it all but I can tell you this: I started to take a B12 supplement when I first became a vegan. Then after being a vegan for several months, I was tested for B12 and the result was normal. Now I am due to be tested again in a few months. I was only taking 100mcg for many years. Now I have decided to take a larger amount. I recently bought pills that contain 500mcg and cut them in half. (I have a pill splitter.) It will be interesting to see what the result is. I assume the result will still be normal.

B12 is something they test for initially when Alzheimers is suspected. At least they did 15 years ago; perhaps they are more sophisticated in diagnosing now eliminating ruling out other issues.

I take a multivitamin daily. My rice milk is also fortified with b12. I've never had an issue with my levels.
