Default Leesberg Hospital

I understand that Leesberg Hospital is a designated stroke center. Has anyone had any experience with this? My husband had a stroke last April and another "episode" just on Thursday. We are planning to be in TV February and March but I really want to know that we can make it to a stroke center within the window (2-3 hrs) if we need to. Also, does anyone know whether or not they have a neuro-interventionalist that can provide catheter treatment that can extent the window to 6-8 hrs if needed? The team here in Syracuse at University Hospital is amazing and I really want to find another.

You can certainly make it with 2-3 hour window. In fact if you live in the southern part of TV it's almost closer to Leesberg than it is to TVRH. They do have an extensive catheter treatment center.

Driving time to Leesburg Hospital from the Golf Cart Bridge across 441 at Spanish Springs is about 20 - 25 minutes. Like Russ said, from south side of TV it is a bit closer (maybe 5 minutes closer)

Yahoo Maps: Golf Cart Bridge to Leesburg Hosp: 11.3 Miles, 23 Minutes

Smile Call an ambulance

The ambulance will get the person there faster and the paramedics can intervene if the person gets worse in transit. (Sometimes we want to "just drive" ourselves there, but it's not a good idea.)

Default Leesburg Hospital

I would definitely recommend calling an ambulance. - Just a thought ---

1. If you drive yourself to Leesburg Hospital, you may have a problem with traffic on 441 or other roads - you just never know what you may encounter.

2. The paramedics on the ambulance will be able to give assistance and they are familiar with the facilities, the traffic, and availability at the hospitals.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. Not easy to talk DH into an ambulance when he is not sure anything is really happening. What is scary to me is unbelievable to him.

Russ, my understanding was that neurologists that do catheter therapy, i.e. feed catheters into the brain, are pretty rare. Are you sure that Leesburg does this? Again, thanks.

No I'm not sure that they do. If in doubt I think you should contact them. I wouldn't rely on any medical info except from the horse's mouth. I know they have a cardiac cath but I don't know if they get into neuro.

Default I have standing orders for me or my wife if ever needed to be transported

to Leesburg hospital.
My wife had her breast cancer surgery there and as far as we are concerned Leesburg is over the top in patient first and foremost attitude. And they are very, very attentive to the needs of the family.
They had/have many more routines/techniques/methods/products/services in our opinion. They also have a substantial support cast of specialists all within 10 minutes of the hospital.

I am sure over time TV hospital will gather more offerings also.
We do live South of 466 and with the new roads open to CR 44 one can be to Leesburg in almost the same time as going to TV.

It is all personal preference and opinion and these are ours.

Last summer, I thought I was having a heart attack, and my husband called for paramedics. They took me to Leesburg where a cardiologist was waiting. Fortunately, it wasn't my heart, but I had the best care and attention one could hope for. The Paramedics know the personnel and hospitals and will take you to the best hospital for care that they can. Trust them, and please tell hubby you are in charge of his health care when or if a situation may occur. And my hopes are that they don't, and you enjoy your stay here in the Villages without health care worries.

Best wishes for your hubby to return to excellent health.

I agree that an ambulance would navigate getting to the hospital better and be able to admnister care while in transit. This sound like a situation that driving oneself to the hospital is not the best option.

Thanks all for your input and good wishes. DH is doing great. Looks like we dodged another bullet. One of our sons (also a doc) is doing some research for us on the hospitals in Leesburg and Ocala. One important factor is having a practiced protocol. He also says that arriving in an ambulance is the way to go. I'll report back on what our son finds out. Again thanks.
