Default Negative Experience at Lake Imaging

7 months ago I had a mammogram at Lake Imaging. They recommended a biopsy on both breasts. It took over two hours. The Dr. inserted the first needle and hit either a nerve or vessel. I had EXTENSIVE bruising over the entire left breast for two months. In the months that have followed I have had sharp needle-like pain that comes and goes without a warning. They also inserted some titanium markers. I am due to return for a follow up check up. I am very reluctant to return there. Yes, the office is pretty and the techs are nice but the radiologist that did the biopsy made a mistake. I can also still see where he inserted the initial needle. Does anyone have any similar experience there? Also, where else could I go in the area that is reputable for future exams. Thanks.

Oh my Gosh, I am so sorry to read about your experience at Lake Imaging. I have been going there for years and had my breast biopsies (2) done there by Dr. Levine. He was wonderful. I can't say the procedures were pain-free. Neither was, but I felt that he and his staff did everything possible to make me as comfortable as I could be. I can't recommend any other imaging center but maybe someone else can. The original mammogram that found my breast cancer was done by Advance Imaging in Ocala. I had the wire localization done there the morning of my surgery at MMC in Ocala. In my opinion the breast biopsy is almost as bad as the surgery, itself. Both times I left there shaking. You might feel better if you got another opinion. I wish you well and hope everything turns out Ok for you. I know what you mean about the bruising as I get horrible, large black and blues just from blood draws sometimes.

Good question! I always go to the one at the Sharon Morse building. They have another location across from the hospital in Leesburg.

And they have a facility at Lake Sumter Landing where all the medical offices are.

When a woman experiences a needle biopsy of the breast or an aspiration of a fluid filled sac in the breast, the needle must penetrate to the area and will sometimes rupture small blood vessels. This will leave bruising and sometimes a "picking type" pain for some time afterward. It has happened to me.

I am not sure a mistake was made because I only have my own experience to go by. Mine was done in Cincinnati, Ohio.

If you are worried about the pain, you should ask your doctor.

I am sorry you had a bad experience.

You can go to Tampa to the Moffitt Center there. It is a large facility that does these procedures frequently. It is about an hour and a half drive there.

I had a needle biopsy years ago up north. They did it surgically and I was "put out" as they said "if" it were positive they'd go further with treatment. It was negative and the cyst was removed. I had a "dressing" on it for I think about a week and was told to wear a "good" bra the whole time. I think I had the prickly feeling off and on for awhile so what Gracie said was probably right on. IF you're not happy you need to go back and talk to the doctor and find out if what you're experiencing is a "normal" thing.

Think about lab work done---where they stick a needle in and do a blood draw. Sometimes you can't feel it and sometimes you do and get a huge bruise. I was told the veins can "roll" and that's what happens. Not sure about needle biopsies.

I was referred to Lake Imaging to have a diagnostic mammogram done as a ( visible ) lump appeared in my right breast .
The technician took a couple of mammogram views and went to show the radiologist . The radiologist sent the technician bck with istructions to take 2 more views and then 6 xrays . When she was finished taking ( more ) mammogram views and the xrays the technician went back again to show the Radiologist . The radiologist then instructed the technician to do an ultra sound .
When I finally saw the Radiologist ( while laying on the table in the Ultrasound Room ) , I asked him if the lump was positive or benign - his response - " I cant tell until I see your previous mamograms " !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now some people might say he was being cautious .
I cant be that charitable .
Logically - lets think about this - if he couldnt tell if the lump was positive or benign without previous mamograms - WHY - did he order mammograms/xrays and an ultra sound ???? Why didnt he just ask for any previous mammograms before the bill for all this work became ridiculous .
Needles to say I asked for my xrays and will never return to Lake Imaging again.
Mary , a good health care providor would have/should have told you what to expect before you had your surgery . If you are still experiencing discomfort I would go to another radliogist for a 2nd opinion . Good luck Mary.

According to what the original poster wrote she didn't have surgery, she had a needle biopsy. A surgical biopsy is an incision and removal of tissue and for that you are sedated.

I am surprised you weren't first required to get your old mammogram films, Maybe it is because you told them you felt a lump. The x rays and ultra sound are exactly what should happen with any palpable lump. I am sure that they would have asked you sign a request for your old films to be released and sent to Lake Imaging at that time. If you had not ever had a mammogram, then surgical removal of tissue would be needed before a valid diagnosis. And even when you have your old mammogram, new mammogram and needle biopsy or surgical biopsy, you would probably need a ct scan too of both breasts before cancer was ruled out.

Our daughter and I recently went to Lake Imaging here in The Villages (We have had many yearly before in Cincinnati) and we had to first request our old mammograms and hand carry them in so that we could have a mammogram here at Lake Imaging. The radiologist did an exam at that time and we were told that we were clear again. We both have had breast cancer. We both found the procedures were just what we were used to in Cincinnati and found the radiologist to be very nice.

Please be sure to get your last mammogram. You will need to send a letter to the place where your mammograms were last done and give them your name, date of birth and your new address and they will then send them to you without charge, you can't ask for them sent over the phone, they must receive a signed written request either from you directly or from the medical facility.. Please take those xrays to another radiologist. Early detection saves lives.

But perhaps the old mammograms were sent to Lake Imaging and then they made the diagnosis that your lump was benign since you didn't mention what happened when you went to a new place.

They weren't trying to make money on you. They were doing what should have been done.

Kindest wishes and hopes that you are o.k.,
AND many hugs.

I have to agree with Gracie on this one though I haven't had breast cancer but have had a "watch" before so have had plenty of mammograms. I couldn't get a mammogram at Lake Imaging until my x-rays from "up north" were in hand. They want to compare the old ones to the new. I'm not sure why you were able to get some done w/o the old ones. I was told too it's standard procedure. I lived in the same community, same doctors/clinic during the whole time from my first mammograms til I moved here so have nothing else to compare my experience to. As for Lake Imaging...have also had MRI's there and my experiences which are a number of some now have never been anything but professional.

Default Lake Imaging Negative Experience reply

Thanks to everyone who posted. To clear up a few things,,,,I have had annual mammograms with no problems and/or cancer. I formerly had gone to Advanced Imaging because of our insurance. Now am on Medicare so I chose Lake Imaging at the Sharon Morse location because of convenience. I went in feeling Ok. I took my former exrays with me. After my mammogram, they took me back to another room. Soon after, one of their Drs. literally burst open the door and said very firmly to say the least."you haven't' had a mammogram in 10 years"! I said yes I have and I brought the records. He then left in a huff. After that I was taken back for more exrays/mammo on both breasts. Again, back to a room. He came in and in the most cold manner, stated that somethings looked suspicious and biopsies on both breasts were needed. I was not only stunned by the news and scared but could not believe how cold he was. Talk about feeling like a piece of meat or just a number. Went back a week later and a different Dr. did the biopsies..took two hours. The first time he inserted the needle I heard him mumble something like bruising. The techs were nice. I did as they said regarding ice to follow and the proper bra. But...my entire left breast where he hit something turned black for weeks. Then, after about a week I felt a huge luimp in almost half of the breast. I went back and they did an ultrasound and said I had a hematoma. Didn't seem concerned and said it would eventually go away. It did after several weeks. But, now 7 months later I am due for a follow up there. I have had needle like pain in that left breast and some scarring. I have never had pain in my breast in my entire life. They also inserted titanium markers which I guess is not unusual so don't know if that is part of the problem also. I am just concerned now about where to go. I don't know if the mistake has caused some serious breast problems as a result. I appreciate though all of the replys...I just needed to explain that I never had a lump. I had what they call micro calcification. I am not a person that complains or is demanding but this situation has me on hold.
