Smile Pharmacist Talk - Nitroglycerin

Hi, it's Barry the Pharmacist again with another pharmacy tip. If you take sublingual nitroglycerin tablets for chest pain, there are some new guidelines on how to take it. Previously, patients had been told that when they are having chest pain to place a tablet under the tongue. If no relief after 5 minutes, place another tablet under the tongue. If still no relief after 5 minutes place another tablet under the tongue and call 911 or emergency services.
The new guidelines state that when having chest pain, place a tablet under the tongue. If no relief after 5 minutes, call 911 or emergency services. You may continue to place a tablet under the tongue every 5 minutes for up to 3 doses.
Remember, nitroglycerin tablets are very volatile and you should tightly close the bottle immediately after each use. I always recommend refilling the prescription every 6 months even if you have lots of pills left.
