Default Side effects of too much Vitamin D or D3

''When your system absorbs excessive calcium after you regularly take too much vitamin D, tissues throughout your body stiffen up. You might notice that your muscles feel weak or you could find it difficult to go about your normal everyday activities. Muscle and bone pain can also occur throughout your body.''

By Melodie Anne Coffman

(Above author explains better than I can the side effects of taking too much vitamin D or D3).

(I began taking it, hoping that it would help my morning stiffness from arthritis...but it actually made it worse).

(Now prefer to just get the D3 from natural sunlight , salmon, eggs, etc. and natural foods that contain it).

''Taking too much of any type of vitamin D, including D-3, elevates calcium levels in your body, leading to hypercalcemia. While hypercalcemia isn’t common in healthy people, if you take a high-dosage supplement for an extended period of time, your vitamin D levels become dangerously elevated. You’ll likely experience several side effects when this occurs.''

''As your vitamin D level rises, you may experience digestive or urinary complications. For example, you might urinate more than you usually do, even though you’re not drinking any extra fluid. Then when you try to pass stool, you could find it difficult or be unable to go for days -- signs of constipation. However, in some cases, high vitamin D levels leave you with diarrhea instead. Belly cramps, nausea and vomiting are sometimes associated with these digestive issues. ''

You might notice that your muscles feel weak or you could find it difficult to go about your normal everyday activities. Muscle and bone pain can also occur throughout your body.''

''Organ tissues and functions could also become affected by consuming high doses of vitamin D over a long period of time. It’s possible to develop calcium-based kidney stones once your vitamin D level becomes too concentrated. In addition your organs, particularly your heart and kidneys, may harden and have a difficult time doing their jobs. Ultimately this can be fatal in extreme cases.''

''Too much vitamin D can produce some general symptoms as well, such as extreme fatigue and sleepiness. You may notice frequent headaches, experience round-the-clock thirst or have a chronic dry mouth when vitamin D levels surge. Sometimes excessive vitamin D could leave you with a foul metallic taste in your mouth, cluing you in that something is wrong.''

''Your body makes vitamin D-3 when you go outside and get some sun exposure. But no matter how much time you spend outdoors, your vitamin D levels won’t become dangerously elevated. Your system just doesn’t convert the vitamin D into its active form in this case. Consuming high levels of any form of vitamin D, from both food and supplements, can raise your vitamin D levels, though. To be safe, avoid ingesting more than 4,000 international units daily, although usually side effects don’t start until after you regularly consume more than 10,000 IU daily. This is far above the daily recommendation of 600 IU a day for men and women, according to the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine.Taking too much of any type of vitamin D, including D-3, elevates calcium levels in your body, leading to hypercalcemia. There may be some problems with getting D3 from the sun. 1) as we age we become less able convert sunlight to D3. 2) in cold weather it won't work through glass, so you can't get it by sitting in a sun room. 3) You should only sit in the sun until your skin turns slightly red. If you tan easy, you will need more and more time in the sun. The darker you get, the more time you will need to spend in the sun. And the more time you spend in the sun, the darker you will get.

My skin doesn't make enough D3 so I'm now taking 1,000 IU per day. I started with 600 IU and worked my way up. On my next blood test I'll see how it's going.

Good warning, Senior. I have always believed that large doses can be bad. My two vitamin books recommend a certain amount based on age. Large doses are not recommended.

Your post has me wondering if I am taking too much Vitamin D. I take calcium with D3 and 1000 iu of Vitamin D plus a multivitamin. I have to add it up---might be too much. I will add it all up. I have some of the side effects you have stated in your post.

Good news is I have a doctor appointment next week for my annual checkup.

Default Not to worry. We don't get that much sun up here.

Here's the lowdown.......not mega doses at all; however, I've stopped taking them awhile ago. Thanks for sharing your own information.

NATURES WAY ALIVE WOMEN'S 50+GUMMY VITAMINS

Dietary Supplement - Chew 2 daily

Their D3 is 100% naturally sourced. It comes from lanolin found in sheep's wool.

One gummy vitamin contains 800 I.U. of D3..........thus the two = 1,600 I.U. daily.

I didn't want to take the D3 from fish oil, not knowing where the fish came from, however, I later came to think that taking "lanolin" from sheeps wool isn't too smart either. I think I much prefer to "eat my vitamins"; there are many healthy sources for these needed "supplements" which can be found in a healthy diet.

Premium Formula
Multi-Vitamin / Multi-Mineral Supplement
26 Fruits & Vegetables
Full B-Complex
Bone + Breast Support*
Made with Pectin
Sweetened with Organic Tapioca
Natural Fruit Flavors

No Gelatin

No Yeast, Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts, Artificial Flavors or Preservatives.

1-800-9NATURE

Made in Canada

+Juice Powders (Plum, Pear, Apple, Beet, Strawberry, Cucumber, Tomato, Cranberry, Cherry, Cabbage, Carrot, Cauliflower, Blueberry, Grape, Apricot, Papaya, Orange, Pineapple, Asparagus, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Celery, Green Bean, Spinach), Pomegranate (Seed), Acai Extract (Whole Palm Fruit).

************************************************** *****************

Since my arthritic stiffness increased after many months of taking these, and now has decreased after stopping them............I've decided that just adding "wild caught salmon" to my diet (natural fish oil/omega 3's) from Canadian waters......great to just throw on the grill or put "skin side down" in a baking pan to bake in oven.......really simple & good.

Atlantic, Wild Salmon, cooked with dry heat: Total Omega-3 fatty acids: 2841mg

I'm just not a pill taker after all, I guess.

The sunshine we get up here isn't the kind to "tan" in........a short amount of time sitting out on the deck is enough to expose the skin to the natural D3 from sunlight.........on hands and face. Obviously, in the winter, no one gets much sun at all on the exposed skin. My skin is very white, so definitely tanning is not my thing......as I'd want to avoid a burn.

You have a major disease already. Your body is already messed -up. Don't blame it on the D3. It is very hard to overdose on D3 or fish oil. I have been taking 5000iu a day for five years and have a blood test every year. It runs around 70ish. You just don't want to go over a hundred.
People should get their advice from their physician not someone wanting to sell books.

I agree with Down Sized.
I love the Internet to research products and issues.
But for every valid article or opinion, there are probably two more that are out of date, incorrect, or biased because of something to sell.
Our Physicians are always the best source of medical information.
One size doesn't fit all.
Our bodies, medical history and nutritional requirements can be very different.

My Vit D was a little under normal so I began taking 5000 IU about 2 years ago. It reached around 70 in four to six months and stabilized there.
