The only legitimate reason to take B12 shots is if you have proven low B12 level or pernicious anemia which is a result of an inability to absorb oral ingested B12. This is an uncommon disorder. Many many years ago some doctors began giving B12 to patients who complained about non-specific symptoms and the placebo effect of getting a shot makes some feel better. As I've heard said, the person who benefits most from a B12 shot is the doctor. If your B12 is low but you do not have an absorption issue you can take B12 orally and it will get into your body just fine.

My doctor put me on B12 shots for about three months and when my levels got back to normal switched me to pills.
This is not necessarily a "forever" medication. |

My doctor told me to take the pills once a day then went for a follow up 3 months later said my levels are up and to take the pills every other day.

I am low on B 12, the Doctor told me that my body would not absorb Vit. B so I need to do the injections. He also told me that I would have to do these for life as once I stop that the Vit. B level will be low again.

I take the I injection 1X/mo and also do not feel any difference. BUT do you find it difficult to find the injectable B12? I think there is a national shortage.

Same thing happened to me. I took the pills and at my next blood test my levels were too high and he switched me to every other day. |

I have an Rx for the shots. I have military ins. and they cover them. So I am not sure about a shortage.

No one has mentioned sub-linguil B12. Because my duodenum is bypassed from a previous surgery, I was told to take sub-lingual (under the tongue). It goes directly into the blood stream. Comes in 500 and 1000 mcg doses.

Diabetics taking Metformin should have their B12 checked. The metformin depletes B12 and oral forms are not sufficient to build the B12 back up.
