In another thread about 3 weeks ago, they called this same type of bird a "Flying Rat" pigeon, now it's "Mourning Dove" lovely!

This shot shows the black band around the back of its neck which is an identifying marking. I was told in the previous thread that this is a Mourning Dove, but, apparently, even that was not correct. I was told in a critique forum, the following, that this is NOT a Mourning Dove: --- Actually, it is a Eurasian Collared Dove, a relative newcomer to the US. It is said that it entered the US through the Southeastern US and in a few years it has basically overpopulated the US they don't migrate like the Mourning Dove and they are not recognized as a game bird and there are no seasons on them as far as hunting them goes. Once they get established, some people say they are pests. Since their arrival, the Pigeon population has decreased greatly. Also, they are not protected, they are considered vermin! --- |
